Using Tutors to Help Students Challenged by Learning Differences
For students with learning differences, ADD/ADHD, and even for gifted students, one-on-one tutoring can be an excellent choice for supplementing and enhancing their educational experience. Students miss out on learning during school for a variety of reasons. For gifted students, boredom and feeling that their work is tedious can lead to a decrease in motivation and can cause their minds to drift. For students with learning challenges, keeping up can be very difficult.
One-on-one tutoring can positively impact a gifted or learning disabled student’s educational experience for a variety of reasons. One’s sense of competency is highly related to his or her experience—the important question on their minds is, “Can I be successful or not?” Low grades or failure at school can cause a student’s confidence to plummet. Tutors can provide positive academic environments enabling students to achieve academic success and build a sense of competency and confidence.
One-on-one tutoring also allows tutors to teach to the student’s strengths and build up skills as needed. A tutor can tailor the lessons to each student’s learning style with close attention to specific needs for advanced skill-building or, alternatively, remediation. One-on-one tutoring is an excellent opportunity to inspire and challenge the unmotivated student to reach his or her fullest potential. Good tutors can improve study skills by modeling, teaching and discussing study techniques in each lesson. Lastly, tutors can build rapport with students in a one-on-one setting in a way that greatly optimizes the learning experience. Students will learn more from tutors they like and respect in an environment that is comfortable and positive.
One-on-one tutoring, by design, helps each individual student learn at his or her best pace, enhance existing skills and gain new ones, increase confidence, and discover the motivation to reach for the stars. Tutors at NewPoint Learning Center love to tutor—they love seeing light bulbs come on, frustrations dissipate and grades improve!

Fight Spring Fever By Focusing on Exams
For most students, spring break is right around the corner. This fun time is usually followed by a big dose of spring fever and the end of semester exams. Exams are important so it’s never too early to start preparing. Follow the tips below to set yourself up to ace every exam and head into summertime feeling accomplished and proud.
1) Gather your notes. Organize them by class and date. Look them over to see what material needs to be retaught and reviewed. Create a study plan that includes 15-20 minutes of review everyday for several weeks leading up to your scheduled exam. Look over your grades for the semester. Where are you shining? Where could you use some improvement? Focus on these areas, and begin to address the issues that may be negatively impacting your performance. Ask your teachers what they recommend for preparing for exams. Act on opportunities for extra credit.
2) Find a study buddy. Large groups can be distracting, but a friend to help you can be a great source of accountability and can help study time fly by.
3) Make a game out of study time! Flashcards, hangman, jeopardy—all kinds of games can be created fromhomework, study guides, and notes to make exam preparation more fun. Ask a teacher or friend for help and start playing!
4) Consider hiring a tutor. If you need help, you can get it! At NewPoint Learning Center we have tutors in all subject areas who are available for 1:1 instruction. Working together you will be able to recover skills, and develop and implement a plan for success.
5) Take a practice test. If you are preparing for college admission tests, NewPoint has practice tests we can administer to help you identify your problem areas as well as your strengths. Call for a testing appointment, set a tutoring schedule, and begin study sessions that are tailored to your individual needs to help you conquer these tests.
6) Take care of yourself! All the studying in the world is only half the battle if you’re not sleeping and eating right, and taking the time to relax and have fun. Especially when it comes to sleep, if you’re not getting enough there’s a good chance you're not performing at your best in any academic setting.
7) Have a good attitude. Acting interested in something can help you to become interested in it! If you go into your classes and study sessions with a good attitude, chances are you’ll learn more and feel more confident.
So have fun on your spring break, but remember to push through spring fever, start preparing for exams and finish the school year strong. At NewPoint Learning Center, we are passionate about giving you the guidance needed for success. Give us a call today!
Easing Frustration & Improving Students' Grades with 1 on 1 Tutoring
If the Greek philosopher and teacher Aristotle were alive today, he might be very sympathetic towards the challenges faced by today’s students. His belief that “The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet,” could just as easily reflect his compassion for today’s parents. All too common, children are becoming overwhelmed by course loads. Familiar struggles include missing homework, poor test scores, inattention in class, a lack of math basics, and poor reading and comprehension skills. And as grades subsequently begin to slip, parents feel compelled to step in and help. But they themselves are unsettled by subjects that they either never encountered in their formative years or that they have simply forgotten. Aristotle may have had only the Socratic Method to guide his students, but today’s parents have many more options, including tutorial services.
“Always begin with the school and the teachers,” says Emily Brittain, Director of NewPoint Learning Center in Green Hills. “Once you know the causes of the low performance or declining grades, you can make a better decision regarding the appropriate solution.”
NewPoint Learning Center is a supplemental educational service that offers occasional or scheduled hourly sessions away from the home environment. That can be important because distractions and family obligations can easily interfere with a student’s studies.
“This allows one-on-one tutoring with attention to areas where students lack specific skills,” Brittain explains. “They learn to improve their current aptitudes while building additional study practices. These types of sessions also provide each student with the appropriate help for a challenging project or with preparation for an upcoming test. Most importantly, with each individual success, a student increases his or her confidence.”
Other focus areas include subject reviews due to a student’s extended illness, concentrated study for problematic subjects, or dedicated preparation for college entrance exams.
Independent tutorial services, like NewPoint, charge by the hour, differing from most franchise supplemental services, which offer their expertise through long-term contractual commitments.
“Students become competent in their school work through consistency,” Brittain points out, “however, flexibility is also necessary, particularly when some needs are very specific and those goals are more readily met.”
Of course, the most anticipated goal for parents of any supplemental program would be an increase in their child’s grade point average. However, Brittain stresses that other success factors should be measured as well. These come from the student’s perspective. Examples include, how positively each student feels about their instruction before and after each session, whether or not the student feels their time was fruitful, and whether or not they have a high regard and respect for their tutor.
Brittain says successful programs are dependent upon each student’s pairing with the right instructor. This is accomplished first by gauging a child’s needs and personality. Then those results are scrutinized to determine which instructor has the appropriate competencies and disposition to make a positive and fruitful connection. Costs and schedules are also a contributing factor.
“Ultimately, a good tutoring program teaches a child to study on his or her own,” Brittain concludes. “True success is measured when the tutors, parents, and student agree that help is no longer needed.”
Aristotle would agree that THAT fruit is sweet indeed.
