For the teen that loves to sew, this year long after school program covers all of the essentials of sewing. We construct custom fit prom dresses in the spring. Some of the local high schools give these students high school credit for their efforts.

This is an afternoon class for the child ten and up. The student will learn how to operate a sewing machine, read a pattern and construct simple garments. Students’ progress at their own speed and proudly wear home their creations. All sewing will be done in class on machines provided.

Summer Sewing Boot Camp

TIME: Saturday, 9:00 - 5:00; Sunday, 1:00-5:00

About Us

In September of 1996, Marguerite's Sewing School in Nashville opened. Marguerite is still teaching the essence of all that she learned and taught at Watkins Institute with the added experience of her years spent with antiques and antique textiles at Belle Meade Plantation.

MARGUERITE LEBLANC

Marguerite is the owner of the Sewing School, her official sewing instruction is from Watkins Institute, Nashville, Tennessee, where classic sewing was a tradition for 74 years. After three years of training, she was invited to teach at Watkins, where she taught for ten years.

In April of 1994, Marguerite became Assistant Curator at Belle Meade Plantation. Her expertise in sewing, textiles, restoration and exhibits were put to good use.

Marguerite is a member of the Costume Society of America, Association of Sewing and Design Professionals and American Sewing Guild.

DEBBIE HELOU

Debbie and Marguerite have a long history. Their children went to preschool together, and they taught sewing at Watkins Institute. She has been teaching at the Sewing School since it started in 1996. She is also a radiology technician, and loves sewing for her children and grandchildren.

NANCY HAGANS

Nancy was one of Marguerite's very first students in 1996. She excelled in her classes and started teaching at the Sewing School in 2009. Her intermediate skirt and blouse classes are imperative to advance students from a beginner level to refined sewers.

AIMÉE GOLENOR

Aimée is Marguerite's daughter, and grew up around sewing her whole life. Educated as a structural engineer, she uses her technical background combined with her sewing knowledge to clearly teach students proper techniques. Aimée enjoys hand embroidery, crocheting and sewing for her children.

KIM FINLEY

Kim was the Director of Education at Belle Meade Plantation, and met Marguerite in 1995. Kim and Marguerite took a historic textile tour of England, featuring London and Bath. She has a Masters degree in history and now works as Marguerite's Office Manager. Currently she enjoys needlework and weaving.

Classes

BEGINNERS

START STITCHING (BEGINNING SEWING): This course is for the student who has never sewn or for those with minimal skills. Students will learn how to use a sewing machine, and construct a simple garment from a commercial pattern. All sewing will be done in class with supervision. You will proudly wear what you make in this course.

START STITCHING HOME TECHNIQUES: This course if for the student who has never sewn or has minimal skills. Students learn how to use a sewing machine and construct simple accoutrements for the home from commercial patterns. All is sewing done in class under supervision. Your home will proudly display your stitching talents.

INTERMEDIATE

SEW LIKE A PRO: Learn all the essentials for a professional finish. Students will learn how to line skirts, insert zippers and complete comfortable waist bands. Blouse techniques will include a lined yoke, convertible collar, continuous bound plackets, buttons and buttonholes.

ELIMINATE THE TATTERS (ADULT CONSTRUCTION): Learn construction techniques of an unlined jacket with a shawl collar and a simple lined dress. Techniques include: piping; lined patched pockets; shoulder pads; corded buttonholes; and invisible zippers.

KNITS: Tame this new age fabric. Special techniques include knit construction, seam finishes, stabilizers, buttonholes and more.

ADVANCED

HANDMADE NOT HOMEMADE (TAILORING): Building a suit jacket from the inside out! This detailed class contains classic and speed tailoring techniques, including layered interfacing, pad stitching, catch stitching, shoulder pads, bound buttonholes, single and double welt pockets.

PERFECT PANTS: Using pattern drafting software we construct a custom pair of slacks and a pair of pull on pants. No more “plumbers” pants here!

PRECISION SEWING: This is a supervised sewing class where advanced students can work on special finishing techniques to start or complete new projects. Advanced students are given assistance in custom fitting.

SPECIALTY

LINGERIE FOR LOVERS (INTERMEDIATE): Students will learn special techniques of customized lingerie, including elastic application, appliqué and special lace techniques.

SENSATIONAL SERGING (INTERMEDIATE): Become a serging queen! Starting with inside and outside corners students use their own serger to learn all about tensions, roll hemming, and flatlocking. We construct a garment a week.

DUCT TAPE DOUBLES (ALL LEVELS): Yet another use for duct tape. We make a dress form that is exactly you. You will be able to try on your garments as you sew without doing the sewing room “strip down”.

SMOCKING: Learn the beautiful hand work of smocking. We start with a pillow top as a sampler.

HAND EMBROIDERING: Embellish your garments and projects with lovely chain stitches, lazy daisies, French knots, leaves and boullion roses. This is what grandmother forgot to teach us!

CONTRUCTION OF CHILDREN'S CLOTHES (ADVANCED): This classic extensive program includes pattern drafting, construction methods and details unique to children’s clothing. The student will draft custom patterns to fit their child. As students advance, heirloom sewing and smocking will be added to the course.

The lazy, hazy days of summer are upon us. When it's too hot to be outside it's time to create something new for your wardrobe. There is something for everyone--all skill levels!

Teens and kids can join our classes at the start of any month. Sewing is a life skill. Anyone interested in attending design school can benefit from learning to sew before school starts. Our alumni attend the best design schools (Parsons, FIT, Kent State to name a few!) Bring a friend and give us a try. Teens can join the teen class or they can join the adult garment classes.

I have been having lots of fun on pinterest. I just love vintage clothes and couture. Fifties style dress are my current passion. Join me for some fun on pinterest .

Sassy Sundresses

Also known as the "bombshell" dress! From the Cabana Cutie Collection, this downloadable Burda Style Pattern #113 is versatile for many occasions. The dress will be custom fit with a fitting muslin. The closure is a full length exposed zipper down the back. Have fun mixing fabric designs on this little number.

Sew Like a Pro Shirt

Hiding under Lauren's scarf is a convertible collar. This classic shirt also has a pocket, cuffs, bound plackets, buttons and buttonholes. Make this a shirt or dress for you or there is a similar pattern you can make for your honey! We will be using Kwik Sew # 3142

Tuesdays 6:00-9:00 8 weeks $290 includes pattern Yearly registration fee $30

Or a man's pattern is available-------same class!!

Knits

Learn how to sew with knits. The first shirt will be the short sleeved shirt made out of cotton knit.(Kwik Sew #3766, View B) The second shirt will be made out of a jersey knit. (Kwik Sew 3802) Techniques for both fabrics will be covered, and, of course, a perfect fit!

Tuesdays 9:30-12:30 8 weeks $280 Tee shirt pattern included. Yearly registration fee: $30

Sit n Sew

This is uninterrupted sewing time just for you. We specialize in professional fit and professional finishes. Pattern instructions are our specialty. Fancy details are included. Take your garments to the next level! Spend time with a group that loves to sew. Students choose patterns that are instructor approved.

Thursdays 9:30-12:30

Tuition: $140 per month (four classes) Yearly registration fee: $30

Teens Can Sew

Creative teens can spend the summer learning how to sew. They will learn how to use a sewing machine, follow simple patterns and create fashionable clothes that fit! If you love fashion, are thinking about a career in fashion design or just love to create, this class if for you. Machines provided.

Wednesdays 3:00-6:00

Tuition: $140 per month (4-3 hr. classes)

Yearly registration fee: $30

Kids Can Sew

Creative kids ages 10 and up learn how to use a sewing machine, follow a simple pattern and create their own clothes. We start with Kwik Sew #3936 a cute skirt with or without the waist tie. Machines Provided! You may use your own sewing machine if you have an instruction book.
