A Great American looking for a Guitar Humidifier
Today I had the honor to meet Antonio Herrera. He called the shop days ago asking about a humidifier for his vintage 1964 Jose Ramirez flamenco guitar. Myself a semi-student of flamenco guitar asked Antonio to bring it by. What an awesome guitar! Made by Ignacio M Rozas, one of many famous guitar makers working at Ramirez's shop in Madrid, Spain during the 50s and 60s. I noticed the cap he was wearing and ask if he was a veteran. He began to tell me of the landing on Utah Beach on D Day in 1944 . Men like Antonio endured what I and most Americans cannot even imagine. Antonio is 90 years old and what a great man! He served with the 298th Engineer Combat Battalion in Belgium, France and Germany until the end of World War ll. Antonio purchased a Planet Waves Humidifier for the Ramirez guitar, and I met an American hero. Thank you Antonio Herrera!! Stop by Franklin Guitar and Fairview Guitar!
Just as it was their duty to serve and defend our nation it should be our duty as Americans to honor and preserve their sacrifice
The Strat: Still One Of The Best Guitars Around
My dear friend from years ago shared this NPR clip Weapon of Choice: Why the Stratocaster Survives . It took me back to 1967 when my friend Cliff Greeson, Alan Heckle and myself witnessed one of only 7 shows that guitarist Jimi Hendrix opened for The Monkees! Greensboro, NC. I remember we wanted to go because we had heard Purple Haze on the radio and were amazed at this new sound on the electric guitar. Of course it was a stratocaster, but in the hands of someone who was to transform the Rock n Roll genre into another dimension. Jimi Hendirx was an incredible talent, a natural, and as we remembered from the last time we saw him in 1970 ( Raleigh, NC) a very humble and gifted musician. The Stratocaster was his guitar (weapon) of choice, but his hands made the magic happen. My friends and I still keep in touch, and are still inspired and excited about music and expressing the art form. Thank you Cliff and Alan for your friendship, and the wonderful memories of experiencing music in the very best time of all! Come see me at Franklin Guitar or Fairview Guitar, David.
New Movie "Unbroken" Features Up and Coming Innovative Guitarist Who Recently Was In Nashville
Angelina Jolie’s film “Unbroken”, in theaters Christmas day, features Miyavi, a Hollywood newbie actor, who portrays Mutsushiro Watanabe, known as “The Bird”. Although Miyavi is an unknown in Hollywood, many know him as the innovative guitarist with 10+ album releases to his credit, and dozens of single releases. Myavi was recently spotted in Nashville while he was there writing and recording for a future release, which will feature him on electric and acoustic guitar, and vocals on his original songs. Playing a Taylor T5 for rhythm and a couple of old Telecasters for lead parts and solos, the songs are electrifying, sung in English, with his long-time cohort Bobo on drums. Comparisons to bassist Stanley Clarke are common, and Miyavi’s playing style often employs a slapping technique, which is rarely seen used on guitar.
One of the songs recorded this Fall in Nashville, "Let Go" is now available on iTunes.
If your Taylor, Telecaster, or any stringed instrument needs attention, or if you need a new, used, or vintage guitar, contact Franklin Guitar and Repair, or Fairview Guitar and Repair.
Choosing the right Guitar
It really comes down to personal preference. You may first select either a steel string or a nylon string guitar, each offering a different tonality and technique. The nylon string guitar has a softer touch and is typically played the the fingers rather than a pick. A steel string guitar will have a brighter sound and is most often played or strummed with a pick, although it can be played fingerstyle as well. From classical, country, blues or rock, give us a call at Franklin Guitar & Repair or the new location Fairview Guitar & Repair! We can help you personally choose the perfect guitar!!
