Easy DIY Updos—Including the Elusive Top Knot
Those with longer hair know well the challenges of styling an updo yourself. But with the weather quickly warming up, getting all that hair off your neck is a must. Here are a couple of simple, DIY updos that you can do quickly and easily at home.
1. Milkmaid Half Halo with Headband
For this look, you will need a headband and a few bobby pins. The headband can be plain or decorative—it just needs to be elastic all the way around, as opposed to plastic or other materials. Secure the elastic headband in place with the bottom at the nape of your neck. Then, starting at either your left ear or your right ear, take small (about 1-inch) sections of hair and gently fold and roll each section into the bottom of the headband. Continue to do this from ear to ear along the nape of the neck until all the hair hanging from the back of your head has been tucked in the headband. Secure any loose pieces or flyaways with bobby pins, and feel free to pull a bit on the coils to make the tucks as tight or as loose as you want.
2. The Perfect Top Knot
The top knot is a very on-trend look right now, but it can actually be difficult to do one correctly so that it stays up all day. The key, whether you choose to put your whole head of hair into a top knot or just half, is to secure the knot as a ponytail before you turn it into a bun. Once you have secured your ponytail where you want your top knot to be, separate the ponytail into three or four different strands depending on the thickness of your hair. Wrap each strand individually around the center ponytail as tightly or as loosely as you want and secure with bobby pins. For extra hold, use a little textured finishing spray or light hair spray to hold everything in place all day long, and enjoy your perfect top knot!

Out of all the variations of blonde and lighter shades available, power blonde is a style that has stood the test of time throughout many decades of different trends, fashions, and hair color technologies. That bright, almost electric all-over blonde color has been widely desired and sought after by everyone from celebrities to the average everyday client, regardless of age or skin tone. Celebrities like Jessica Simpson , Cameron Diaz , Gwen Stefani , Kelly Ripper , and others have all sported power blonde looks over the years, and it is a shade that is surprisingly flattering on a variety of different types of people.
Interestingly enough, the styles that are very popular today—balayage, ombre, and others—are achieved through a “paintbrush” technique that is relatively new on the hair color scene. Power blonde, however, is achieved through a very traditional technique: foil. Many hair stylists left foil color techniques in the early 2000s and have moved on to other styles, but foiling is actually the most effective way to create dynamic and lasting power blonde tones. The specific, detailed, and targeted technique of foiling ensures that the color will turn out just as bright and vibrant as the client dreams.
Of course, not everyone can achieve power blonde in just one appointment, and it is important for hair stylists to help set and manage expectations with their clients. Clients with lighter hair may very well be able to go from regular blonde to power blonde in one appointment, but for those with darker hair, it may take two or even three appointments to fully bring the color to where it needs to be. The internet can be a huge help to this end, allowing both stylists and clients to pull up pictures and get a frame of reference for what they want and what they are able to accomplish from appointment to appointment.
At Element Salon , our foil expert of over 20 years specializes in using this technique to help anyone achieve and maintain the power blonde look with a tried and true method that will leave clients looking and feeling fabulous. To schedule an appointment or to learn more, call (615) 383-2045 or visit elementsalonnashville.com for information about all of our stylists and services.
Managing Guest Expectations as a Hair Stylist
In the age of Pinterest and Instagram, sometimes it can be hard for stylists and clients to be on the same page. Many clients struggle communicating exactly what they want, and many stylists struggle communicating what is possible given the bounds of the client’s hair texture, desires, and budget. But with a little hard work and honesty, stylists can always be sure that they are communicating well with their clients. Expectations can be set realistically and mindfully so that everyone walks away happy.
Mismatched expectations usually occur around three things: time, money, and style. A client may want a hairstyle or color that, given the state of their current hairstyle, will take two or three appointments to gradually transition to—but they expect it can be done in one. They also may not realize the cost of achieving and up keeping a certain style; this is especially true for some of the fashionable and on-trend colors today such as blues, purples, and more. It takes a lot of work (and money) to achieve the look in the first place, and even more to upkeep it regularly. And finally, some clients may desire a look that the natural texture of their hair was never designed to be able to achieve, no matter how much work is done to it.
In these situations, it is important for stylists to…
- Look the guest in the eye and be sincere and honest. Let them know you want them to have a fabulous hairstyle as much as they do! Developing a trust relationship with your client from the start is absolutely essential.
- Not be afraid to talk about money. Money talk can be uncomfortable at times, but it is better to set expectations up front rather than afterwards. Getting an idea for the price point your client is comfortable at can help you move forward and keep them happy.
- Offer creative solutions, and give your client options. You may not be able to do exactly what they want in the time frame they want within the budget they want, but there are almost always creative ways you can start working towards their end goal without damaging their hair or their bank account. Talk through the options with them, and be as creative as you can!
Stylists who communicate well with their clients about time, money, and style can be sure that their clients will thank them and trust them in the future, and both stylist and client will be happy with the finished product.

Why You Should Budget for a Luxury Haircut on a Regular Basis
There are certain things that, because we do not do them very often—or because it is especially important that the service is done right—we are willing to pay a higher price for. An upscale dinner, massage, and a nice manicure or pedicure are all things that we do not think twice about the cost of because we want to make sure that everything is perfect. So why, when it comes to hair, do we think differently?
Many people will budget for a relaxing massage or a nice anniversary dinner, but balk at paying more than the cost of a fast-food meal for a haircut. But the reality is that a haircut should be treated like any other semi-regular luxury or service, and budgeted for accordingly. Why?
- Getting the perfect haircut a few times a year—rather than a less-than-perfect haircut every six weeks or so—means that you will not have to cut off as much or make as many trips to get your hairstyle exactly how you want.
- Your hair and how it frames your face is one of the first things people notice about you! Investing in a quality, regular haircut ensures that you are always presenting yourself how you want to be presented.
- Three words: value added services. Some of the things that make a luxury haircut luxurious are head massages, hot towels, styling guidance, and a great blowout at the end. You definitely will not be getting all of those things at a cheap walk-in clinic.
- Self-care is important! How many things do you do for just you? If we are being honest, we could probably all stand to treat ourselves a little more. A luxury haircut is a great way to take care of yourself and put your best foot forward in the coming new year.
- You can have confidence knowing that you will walk away with a haircut you really, truly love. When you are paying a premium price for a hair service, it means that the stylist you are working with has years of experience and ongoing education to ensure that he or she is knowledgeable about current trends and how to achieve the perfect cut for you.
These are just a few of the reasons to budget for a luxury haircut on a regular basis, but there are many more! At Element Salon, luxury is what we specialize in. All of our stylists are experienced and educated in the art of giving you the perfect cut every time and making you feel pampered and flawless. We would love to show you what sets us apart!

Add Style and Sparkle to Any Hairdo with a Braid
Most people style their hair at home on a regular basis, but doing the same few styles over and over again can get monotonous—especially around the holidays when there are plenty of special events where one might want a more elaborate hairstyle for the evening.
One easy way to add a bit of panache to your rotation of normal styles is with a braid! Braids are a multipurpose look and can be added to any style or provide the focal point of your favorite ‘do. They are beautiful, fun, and appropriate for any setting from the beach to the boardroom.
Most people are familiar with the standard three-strand braid, but there are a huge variety of other types. Four-strand, French, and fishtail are a few of the most common, but when it comes to braids, the possibilities are literally endless.
People have come up with so many different types of braids because they are so versatile and classic. You can use them to give the appearance of spending a lot of time on your hair on a day you would rather not wash it, or use them to keep it out of your face by braiding the sides or creating a French braid “headband.” For a done-up look, you can even do multiple braids and pin them all together into a gorgeous braided bun. When you are finished with your braid, you can pull and tug at the strands a little bit to give a “messy” look. You can even braid a small section of your ponytail and wrap it around the elastic for an instant touch of pizazz.
Some people hesitate when it comes to braiding their own hair at home because they are not sure where to start, but if this is you, never fear! Your stylist can help you by showing you a few tips and tricks at your next appointment, and there are many resources available for those who want to learn.
Besides reputable style websites, YouTube videos, and Pinterest tutorials, there is also a book we highly recommend at Element Salon by Kerastasé, The Couture Book of Braids. The Couture Book of Braids features 30 braid tutorials for every occasion, most of which can be done on your own by anyone who is familiar with the standard three-strand braid. You might even consider a 30-Day Braid Challenge to inspire yourself to learn new styles and techniques!
There are also a few products that can make your braiding endeavors a breeze. Shu Uemura makes a Texture Wave Spray that will give your braid an effortless, beachy look. Materialiste All-Over Thickening Spray Gel by Kerastasé can be applied to wet or dry hair to add body and structure for a texturized braid that is not crunchy or inflexible. The Kerastasét Ultine Solid Serum is a must-have for braid enthusiasts: it makes hair smooth and shiny and tames split ends, and can even be applied to the hands while braiding to make everything stay in place.
Adding a braid is an easy, simple, and creative way to give flare to any hairstyle. With so many different kinds, there is no reason not to try one, if not all! The next time you book an appointment at Element Salon, ask your Element stylist to show you a braiding technique or two—they would be happy to empower you with the knowledge and skills it takes to make fabulous and fashionable braids at home!

Wave and Texture for “The Rest of Us”
Everyone has seen the long, flowing, effortless beachy waves and curls that are so popular at the moment. But for those of us without a personal stylist or several hours in the morning to do our hair, is achieving that look on a regular basis really realistic?
Fortunately, with a few simple tricks and easy-to-use products, this beautiful and trendy hairstyle is within reach for even the most beginner hairstylists among us.
- When you are trying to achieve wave and texture while going from wet hair to dry hair, the best bet is to start with a volumizing shampoo. Our preferred brand at Element Salon is Kérastase’s volumizing shampoo , but there are many different types of quality volumizing shampoos on the market.
- Before moving to the blow-drying phase, use a heat protector like Kérastase’s Nectar Thermique . This helps to keep your hair from being damaged by the high temperatures of your hair dryer.
- There are several different methods for blow-drying. You can use a round brush, which takes a little practice to learn how to do. Or you can simply flip your head over and employ a power dry using a diffuser for maximum volumizing effect.
- Once your hair is mostly dry, you can start to curl it. At Element Salon, we use GHD curling irons , but no matter which iron you choose, you want to make sure that you keep it at a 1” barrel for medium length hair and a 1.25” barrel for longer hair.
- The most important factor in how a curl turns out and whether it stays in place is what product you use. Choosing a quality multipurpose texturizing spray like Shu Uemura’s Texture Wave spray will create volume without looking or feeling sticky.
- Curl your hair in just a few parts. Divide it in half, top to bottom, and then separate each half into four or five pieces. In total, unless your hair is extremely thick, you should not need more than ten or so pieces to be able to curl your entire head.
- Curl the middle only. Do not curl all the way to the roots, or all the way to the tips. Leave about an inch in either direction, as this will achieve that “beachy” look. Make sure to curl away from your face, too.
- At the end, wait for your hair to cool so the curls have time to set and run your hands through your hair gently.
- Finish with a few more spritzes of texturizing spray, or for especially unmanageable hair, try a hairspray like Shu Uemura’s Sheer Lacquer hairspray , which will give a strong and durable hold without making your head or hands feel sticky.
- And last but not least: be fabulous!
Following the above steps will give you effortless, flowing, wavy locks that look like you got them professionally done. But for the times when you really do need a professional, Element Salon Nashville is here for you. Fall Color Transitions for Lifelong Blondes
If you are someone who is a dedicated blonde—blonde year-in and year-out—it is natural to be wary of major hair color changes. But it is also normal to want a bit of a change as seasons come and go: perhaps a slight highlight shift or a new color sheen that will give you an updated look without doing anything too drastic.
With a little extra communication with your stylist, a smooth and stylish transition to winter weather is very achievable. There are many options for blondes who want to go a little darker or richer for the season without undoing all the work they have done to keep up their light locks.
At Element Salon, we can do something as simple as adding an easy toner, which will give your blonde hair a “caramelized” or “buttery” sheen that will last many weeks and give you the opportunity to try out a darker tone without committing to it permanently. If you are absolutely sure you would like to go a shade or two darker, we can do a tasteful and natural-looking lowlight that will bring out your existing colors and add depth and fluidity to your entire look.
If you are not sure what you want to do, our qualified stylists at Element Salon can work with you to ensure that you walk away with a style and color you love. Pictures are extremely helpful. If you have any pictures of friends or celebrities whose hair color you like, feel free to bring them along to show your stylist.
The more we know about what you want, the better! If you do not have any pictures, our stylists can sit down with you before your appointment and browse through Google and Pinterest to get a clear picture of your dream color. If you are a bit hesitant, we can even work in stages—adding a toner during one appointment and lowlights at the next. Our focus at Element Salon is on your comfort and happiness!
There are hundreds of different variations and shades of blonde, and several options for blondes who want to try something a little richer or darker for fall and winter. Discover yours today by making an appointment with one of our blonde experts at Element Salon—call (615) 383-2045 or visit our website at elementsalonnashville.com to browse our stylists and learn more about all our styling services.
Olaplex: A Hair Miracle
Olaplex is making waves—quite literally—in the hairstyling industry, and for good reason. But even though its use in salons all across the country is expanding, many people, consumers and stylists alike, have never heard of it or do not know what it is.
Olaplex is a single-molecule chemical compound originally developed by medical technicians to aid in skin graph surgery. Researchers found that the compound helped the new skin to bind to the original skin seamlessly and healthily, and soon other industries began to pick up on other, more glamorous, uses for Olaplex.
When the hairstyling industry began to use Olaplex , it was originally relied upon as a corrective—“insurance for your client’s hair,” as their tagline reads. Essentially, Olaplex began being used when a client was not happy with their new ‘do. As most people who get their hair done regularly are well aware, constantly making changes and adding new colors, highlights, and more can take a toll on otherwise healthy hair, leaving it dry, brittle, and frail.
If a client is not happy with the work that has been done on their hair, sometimes there is only so much a stylist can do to fix the work without over-processing the hair to the point of damaging it for good. By applying Olaplex, stylists can now correct whatever the client is unhappy with and add new colors and shading without damaging the hair further! Olaplex is a binding agent and a bond multiplier, so rather than fraying hair, it helps it to hold together even under stress.
Once Olaplex began being used as a corrective, it gained rapid popularity as a simple add-on to existing services because of how soft, lightweight, and fluid it leaves your hair looking for a fraction of the cost of other treatments. At Element Salon, adding Olaplex to any service is just $25, and because it is a bond multiplier and perfecter, it will make whatever service you choose even more flawless and fabulous.
At Element Salon, we have found many creative ways to incorporate Olaplex into our existing services. Our clients have never been happier with the look and feel of their hair when they walk out the doors. Many of them come back requesting Olaplex multiple times, and we look forward to being able to use Olaplex to create even more happy and beautiful clients in the future.
More information about Olaplex can be found on their official website at olaplex.com . To schedule your appointment to receive a treatment with Olaplex at Element Salon, give us a call today at (615) 383-2045. Go “Bronde” for Fall at Element Salon
With the change of seasons, many people are looking to update their style to match the cooler weather outside. Blonder colors and light, breezy tones are popular during the summertime, with good reason. But as soon as the cooler days arrive, we tend to gravitate towards colors that are darker and warmer to better complement both the colors outside and our gradually changing skin tones.
Unfortunately, going back and forth from blonde to brown every year can do a number on healthy hair, not to mention your wallet. Many are searching for a more affordable, lower maintenance option to keep from having to shell out a lot of money every four weeks and subject their hair to treatments and dyes. Enter:bronde.
Bronde is just what it sounds like: a blend of brown and blonde. There are literally hundreds of variations of bronde, some leaning more towards the blonde end of the spectrum and others toward the brown. They can also be infused with various highlights, shades, and tones, for a fully customizable look that can be personalized to individual preferences, skin tones, and more. A simple Google search of “bronde” shows just how many variations there are!
The wonderful thing about bronde is that with just a few tweaks, you can be ready for summer, winter, and every season in between. Rather than changing the whole color of your hair, simple modifications can be made in its tone and highlights to give you just the change you need without costing you lot of money or damaging your hair. Bronde is also extremely flattering on a huge range of skin tones and natural hair colors, making it extremely accessible to the everyday person.
If you are thinking of going bronde, spend a little time on Google to familiarize yourself with the different shades available and pick which ones you think would suit you best. There is an outdated belief that hair stylists do not like clients to bring in pictures, but in the modern hair styling industry, pictures are extremely helpful! They help us to ensure that we know what you have in mind for the final product so we can do a great job for you and help you receive the utmost satisfaction with your new hair color.
Once you have found the perfect shade of bronde for you, call Element Salon for a consultation! We will compare your pictures to your hair to see if what you want is attainable and determine the steps needed to get there. The good news is that bronde is very achievable for all except severely damaged hair, and chances are good that we can get your hair exactly where you want it to be!
Bronde is a gorgeous, universally flattering option for those looking to transition healthily, easily, and affordably into cooler fall weather. If you are ready to make the change to bronde, call Element Salon today!
We can be reached at (615) 383-2045, and more information about all of our services and stylists can be found at elementsalonnashville.com .
How can I get the perfect professional-looking blowout hair style at Home?- By Katie Hartnet
It is undeniable, we all dream to one day have our own personal stylist who will be there when we wake up, style our hair, and follow us around just in case one side goes flat. The truth is most of us do not have that luxury. Not to mention the time to make it to your favorite salon each day for that amazing blow out! So does that mean you should only have great hair on the days you make it to see us here at Element?! We think not! Here are a few tips on how to achieve that perfect blow out in the comfort of your own home!
Pre-dry, pre-dry, pre-dry!! This first yet very simple step is essential! Make sure you towel dry your hair before attempting to blow dry it. If the water is dripping off your hair it is too early to begin. In fact, if the water is dripping from your hair, so is the products you are applying, what a waste! Gently towel dry your hair by patting it dry. Do not try to be a DJ by rapidly rubbing the towel at your scalp. Your hair is in its most fragile state when wet. Treat it with respect. :) Once your hair is no longer dripping, apply your products (see below for the best products to use!). Next, keep your blow dryer on a lower setting and pre-dry using your fingers. The goal of pre-drying is to get the hair damp, about 80% dry. When hair is damp it will be able to take the shape you wish to see. During this time, focus on the roots. Dry them upward, in order to create more volume. If you dry your roots flat, your hair will be flat!
Take it a step further: Hair reacts differently in different climates. How does your hair react in humidity? Do you like it? If you do, you are one in a million. Step out of your muggy bathroom and do your blow out in your bedroom. The humidity in your bathroom will cause your hair to frizz.
Tools and Products:
If you want a professional blow out, use professional tools! A lot of research, chemistry, and technology goes into professional products and tools to ensure the best results. If you want an everyday drugstore product looking blowout, by all means clip those coupons! But if you want the best blowout keep reading.
Foremost, you must use the right products for your hair. We all have different types of hair from curly to straight, fine to thick, oily to dry ect. If you are using the wrong products you will not have the results you want. If you are unsure of which products are right for you ask your stylist! It is their job to recommend and refer you to the products that will keep your hair looking and feeling fabulous! Think of hair products as prescriptions, medicine for your hair! The right products will remedy your hair frustrations. Essential blow out products to consider include a foundation, a muscle, and a finish, or a heat protectant and styling oil, a mousse, and a finishing spray. Each professional blow out works these products together to protect, seal the cuticle to create shine, and add memory for hold.
Concentration is key. It is next to impossible to create a fabulous blow out without staying organized. Section your hair in order to concentrate on parts of the head one at a time starting at the bottom. Blow dryers come with attachments, use them! The nozzle with the flat end will be your best friend, we promise. The nozzle, a concentrator, will allow the air to flow in one direction which helps seal the cuticle of the hair. Always point the nozzle down the hair shaft towards the end to further seal the cuticle.
Practice, practice, practice! Using a round brush is not the easiest task the first time you try it. Do not get frustrated, it will come with time. Round brushes are an important tool in receiving the volume and bountiful curl we strive towards. Use tension to create a smooth blow dry. Wrap your strands around the round brush and concentrate on the roots, then the mid shaft to ensure they are dry and smooth. Focus on the ends last just to create a finish. Do not over dry the hair, this can cause damage and dryness.
While blow drying your hair at home, please keep in mind the importance of pre-drying, products and tools, and sectioning. The skills of achieving a professional blowout do not come over night. It comes with patience and practice. So get your round brush in hand, smile on, and start drying, because no matter what the end result may be, you will still look gorgeous darling.

3 Secrets to getting the salon appointment time and date that you want with your favorite Stylist- By Nikki Mitchell
First and foremost
Pre booking is the most efficient way of getting your desired date and time, and the best way of keeping your hair looking happy and healthy. Come in with your schedule, and put your phone calendar to work. Your stylist can tell you how long they would recommend you waiting between visits, and what they would recommend for your next visit as well. This will help alleviate any sort of stress about getting in on time, especially if you are getting in for a color service.
Being aware of your stylist’s schedule and calling a couple of weeks in advance is always a great option. Knowing how long your appointment will go, and knowing when your stylist will be available will ensure that you get in around the time that best works for you. Keep in mind that some stylists may book further in advance than others. It’s always best to get familiar with their schedule even just for your piece of mind, and if you can’t get in exactly when you want don’t forget to ask to get on the pending list, some times last minute cancelations happen and you get lucky!
If in a last resort you call the day-of or absolutely can’t wait any longer and you need to get in, you always have the option of temporarily seeing another stylist that your primary would recommend. When it comes down to a color service, your primary stylist always keeps your formula and can pass it along. If you are coming in for a haircut, there are always other stylists at the same price point who are just as talented.
How can I get hair with volume but avoid the Frizz?- by Keith Williams
1. Round brushing
By round brushing you are creating a natural over direction of the hair which will lift the hair off the scalp and if you use a boar bristle round brush it will not only build volume without frizz but it will make your hair shine as well.
2. Blow drying your hair upside down
Using this technique of drying your hair you are guaranteed to create volume when you toss your hair right side up just run some Cristal Sculpt by Kerastase, through your ends and you will have a finished look.
3. Setting the hair
This can be done a variety of ways you can do this with rollers, a curling iron, a smoothing iron, or a round brush. I usually do this with a round brush. As you round brush you will notice that your hair will naturally want to curl in on itself, so you just let it. After it is curled, roll it to the scalp and use a pin curl pin to hold the curl in place to the scalp. Repeat this process until you have curled every piece, let it completely cool (setting the hair) and after that take the pin curl pins out and finally, just run your fingers through your hair to break up the curls.
4. Brazilian Blowout/Keratin Treatment
These services are offered in the salon and these will actually change your hair texture from frizz to smooth. That being said, your hair will be limp and flat for the first couple of days. After that you will notice reduced frizz and you can then round brush, set your hair, and blow-dry your hair upside down to achieve volume without frizz.
What should I ask about when I decide to color my hair?- By Glenda Martin
Here is a list of some tips to help you find your perfect color.
Communication is key! You and your stylist speak two different languages.
These questions will help you break down the barrier.
1-Will this work for me?
Sure we all wish we could have Jennifer Anniston’s gold locks, or Gwen Stefani’s icy blonde.
The thing is, it may just not work. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have a similar look within reason. Your stylist wants you to look like you and will be able to work out a tone that gives you what you want and looks the best on you. You have to trust your stylist to look at key things like skin tone and underlying pigment to assure that you look great with your new color.
2-What maintenance will this require?
It is important to know how much time and money will go into your color before committing. If you are a dark brunette and you want be platinum then you have to consider not only the time and money it takes to get there. But also the time u will spend maintaining it. And with a look like this one you can plan on seeing your stylist every 3 weeks. Another option for you if you don’t want to commit to something so high maintenance is consider getting really light balayaged pieces that frame your face!
3-Do I need a certain shampoo and conditioner?
This is a VERY important question. You just paid to get your amazing color done, don’t you want to maintain a rich and lasting result? All hair color fades eventually but with the right products you will keep the vibrancy of fresh salon hair much longer. Color save shampoos and conditioners contain certain ingredients to preserve your color. Drug store products contain a lot of sulfates which is the arch nemesis of color!
4-Are you going to be a serial color changer?
Are you a person who wants to change all of the time? If so that’s awesome! Just make sure you aren’t wanting to go to extremes too often. Taking drastic changes from say really blonde to really red and vice versa is extremely difficult. It also takes a toll on your hair. And to any good stylist, they will chooses the integrity of your hair over your desire for extreme and constant change.
5-Is the color you want in the stylists wheelhouse?
It important to research your stylist and see if you have a similar aesthetic. Book a consultation and ask them to show you photos of their work. This is 2015 if they don’t have any RUN! If you a person who want hot pink and orange hair. Going to a stylist who only does natural looks won’t be your best bet. The same goes in reverse.
6-Is there anything you can do to liven up your locks in between appointments?
Yes of course! There are several things you can do. One in which is a gloss. This is great for any color but especially if you have a solid color. A gloss deposits shine and pigment to make you look good as new! This is also a quick and fairly inexpensive service. Have a last minute trip and your highlights need a quick retouch? Ask for a mini highlight or balayage service.
7-Are you ready for a change?
Have you ever decided to paint something and brought home a color you loved in the store then hated it once you had the entire room done? Didn’t you wish you just painted a square of the wall and lived with it a few days first? Well the same goes for your hair. If you are wanting a major change and you are not good with change I would strongly recommend talking with your stylist about starting off subtle and slowly transitioning. Because in the end you can have the most beautiful color in the world and if you weren’t ready for it you will hate it!
Transition From Summer to Fall With Balayage
It may not seem like it when you step outside, but summer in Middle Tennessee is well past the midway point, and fall is fast approaching. Many women are beginning to think about their fall hairstyles and wanting to transition from that lighter, blonder, sun-kissed summer look to something a little darker and more seasonal for the cooler months ahead.
But when it comes to drastic hair color changes, the maintenance and upkeep has a tendency to be extreme, especially the farther the color gets from your natural tone. So how do you get that darker, autumn and winter look without having to make an appointment at the salon every four weeks?
Balayage is a hair color trend that has been skyrocketing in popularity lately, and with good reason. Balayage is a technique that involves hand painting color onto the head, seamlessly blending the original or natural hair color into the desired tone. With a balayage, you can transition your lighter summer ‘do into a darker fall color with minimal upkeep and maintenance. You will walk away with a trendy style that incorporates the best of both worlds and will not leave your roots obviously showing in two weeks.
Many people think a balayage is the same thing as an ombre, but not quite. Balayage is the method of painting the color onto the head; ombre is a hair color style. You can create an ombre style with a balayage technique, but the possibilities with balayage are endless and certainly do not stop at ombre!
The wonderful thing about balayage is that it gives people the opportunity to showcase all of the fantastic, transitory colors in between shades that they might otherwise miss out on with an all-over color—plus the added benefit of minimal upkeep, saving time and money. Balayage can work on any and all hair colors, from electric blond to dull grey.
So if you are looking to transition your hairstyle from summer to fall seamlessly in a way that will turn heads and keep your bank account happy, consider a balayage! At Element Salon , our hair color experts will give you the perfect balayage that will incorporate your gorgeous existing color and help you prepare for the season ahead!

What’s ombre and what’s balayage? - by Aimee Saunders
Two hair techniques that have taken the world by storm, Ombre and Balayage. How cool for us as stylists huh? How cool for our clients to be introduced to something different than their same root touch up or 5 zillion foils they are so used to. (Not that there isn’t a time and place for each of these).
Lets Start with Ombre
You’ve seen it, the look where it seems like someone hasn’t done their roots in- let’s say- a year? Surprise! We actually do that on purpose in the salon. Technically it is gradual lightening of the hair strand fading from darker color at the root to a lighter one at the ends. It can be subtle or very striking depending on what look you are going for.
Some questions to ask yourself before deciding on getting an Ombre in the salon.
1. Are you ok with the look of roots?
2. Do you style your hair? We ask because it looks best when waved with an iron.
3. Do you like to make a statement?
Next up there is Balayage
It is (in my opinion) what’s up with color right now. Balayage is French- meaning “to sweep”. And that is exactly what we do. It is a process of sweeping color vertically to create sun kissed looks in hair. Usually 2-3 levels from your natural color. It is intriguing to see in a salon because instead of the regular foils we have seen for years it is applied with cotton and plastic wrap.
Some questions to ask yourself before deciding on getting Balayage in your hair.
1. Are you ok with low maintenance, subtle color you can wear either straight or waved?
2. Are you prepared for change and giving up those foils?
In my opinion, Ombre is making an exit for now, we have played her out. Balayage is in full force and what is on point at this moment. Stay in style my friends, Stay in style.
Why can’t I style my hair like my stylist?- by Anna Armstrong
You must invest in professional tools and professional products. Ask your stylist what to buy and to explain to you how to style your hair. Your stylist should give you a tutorial on how to hold tools while styling your own hair, what amount of product to use, how to cocktail the products, and the order in which you should use them. Your stylist created the look on you and he/she understands the intention behind the look and how it should be worn so don’t be shy and ask for a class on how to recreate the look at home by yourself. However if you don’t have the right products and hot tools (blow dryer, curling iron, flat iron) you'll never have the hair you dream of: Period. Listen to your stylist(it’s not really a secret.)
3 reasons alternating shampoo is a good idea- by Brynn Boyd
1. Consistently shampooing with the same shampoo can over time cause build-up of residue in the hair. This can cause the hair to be weighed down or dull. To easily avoid this, change up your shampoo every once in awhile. An easy tip is to use a clarifying shampoo once a week.
2. It is most helpful when styling your hair if you have previously used a shampoo to complement your style. For instance, if you have naturally wavy or curly hair and are going to let your hair air-dry or diffuse it, you should use a shampoo to enhance your natural curl. If you want to style your hair for a fancy event or do a creative updo, then some sort of volumizing shampoo would be best.
3. If you are consistently using just a volumizing shampoo (or curly, or smoothing), your hair can become accustomed to it and it will stop working as well. This is why it is best to have several shampoos that you like and rotate them accordingly.
Five tips to Looking Young and Vibrant at Any Age- by Aimee Saunders
1. REST. Make sure rest and sleep are a priority for you to put your best foot forward everyday at any age. If possible get between 6-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night putting all those electronic devices we can’t live with out (phones, ipads, computers) on time out.
2. HYDRATE. Make sure that working machine- aka- your body is fueled with plenty of water throughout your day. Make it a habit to get at least 64oz of water in a day.
3. EXERCISE YOUR BODY AND MIND. It doesn’t matter if you dance for 20 minutes or you work hard at your body. Just move. Move everyday. We are in a long-term relationship with someone we never asked to be. Ourselves. So there is no choice we are stuck together so be nice to yourself, be a friend to yourself and acknowledge you are together forever so move, learn, and always grow.
4. MOISTURIZE/REMOVE YOUR MAKEUP BEFORE SLEEP/REPEAT. Moisture is one of the most important things for the biggest organ in your body. Your skin! You are giving moisture to the insides through your water intake so don’t forget to give attention to your skin as well. Not only your face, but also your entire body. It is never too late to start! Make sure to get all that goop off before going to sleep for the night. Not only will it allow your skin to breathe, removing mascara and eye makeup will help with keeping your eyes vibrant and not irritated. Make sure you follow up with a night cream and an under eye cream. Wrinkles are endearing but if we can postpone them why not???
5. DRESS FOR YOUR BODY TYPE BUT BE WHO YOU ARE. Nothing looks better on someone than confidence. I don’t care what age or size you are, your personal style should express who you are and fit your body type. They have experts for that if you aren’t sure. Don’t always just wear or pick things because they fit. Realize what makes you make a statement in your most positive way.
How do I know what I hair style I want?- by Brynn Boyd
1. How big of a change are you looking for?
This is one of the most important questions when finding a new hairstyle. Every person coming into a salon is there for a reason-to get their hair done. However, not everyone is there for a drastic change! Knowing how much change a client is looking for helps set a filter and guideline for the stylist so that they can then address the clients needs accordingly. For some people a "new look" simply means a refreshed hair trim or a highlight touch-up. For others, it may mean a pixie cut with a vibrant new color. Once the stylist and client are on the same page as far as change, they can then decide what the new look will be.
2. How frequently are you willing to get your hair done?
This directly corresponds to the previous question. If a client is in the salon every 3-4 weeks then you can absolutely do a high-maintenance hair cut or color. However, if they are only getting their hair done every 3-6 months, then you need to choose a style or color that will grow out very naturally and require less maintenance.
3. What do you dislike most about your hair?
While this question seems entirely negative, it can be the most valuable question to point you to the right hairstyle. For instance, if a client with medium textured hair feels like their hair is too heavy and straight, their "new look" can be achieved by adding layers to remove weight and add texture and movement. Knowing what you don't like can quickly get you to what you love in a hairstyle!
What can I do to make my hair Color last longer- by Chadd Bryant
We regularly spend a good chunk of money to get perfect hair color—and then it fades before we get to enjoy it! The most budget-friendly hair color is the kind we can make last the longest, and there are lots of tricks to stretch the color and stop it from changing so quickly.
1) Avoid Hot Showers
Hot water doesn't only dry out your skin; it can decrease the life of your hair color. The temperature opens up your cuticle, releasing your precious color—and moisture.... I always tell my clients to shampoo and rinse with room-temp water, towel dry, condition, then rinse with the coldest water you can stand to seal that cuticle shut! This will provide longer-lasting color, keeping your locks nice and hydrated while also eliminating split ends!
2) Swim Smarter
Protect your hair in the sun and chlorine. Use a hair protector with SPF when in the sun, pool, and ocean to keep your color from fading. A product with sunflower oil is great as it also has antioxidants to protect the hair.
3) Don't Overuse Hot Tools
Staying away from your hot tools the first week after coloring your hair will also help prevent the color from fading. Hot tools such as blow dryers and straighteners actually speed up the process of color fading. While these tools are sometimes necessary, it is best to stay away from them the first week or so after you color your hair.
4) Wait to Wash Your Hair as Long as Possible
The new dry shampoo offerings on the market can be a great product for newly-colored hair because when you wash less, color lasts longer. I always have my clients not wash their hair after color for as long as they can go—at least 24 to 48 hours.
5) Try a Shower Filter
This will remove chemicals, chlorine, and minerals from your shower water. Hard water strips your hair's color and natural oils; these filters minimize color rinsing down the drain.
6) Prep Your Hair Before Coloring
One to two days before a color service, use a clarifying shampoo to remove styling product build-up. You might also want to use a deep-conditioning mask once a week to put hydration back in the hair; this will help keep color from fading after you switch up your hue.
7) Use a Thermal Protectant
This will protect against heat damage from styling tools. Thermal protectants will help reduce color fade by keeping the integrity of the hair in good condition.
8) Deep Condition Less
While deep conditioning or at-home masks are a good idea before you color, they can fade a rich brunette or vibrant red. The conditioner or mask is designed to get deep in the hair follicle to moisturize. However, when it's rinsed out, it takes the color molecule with it—resulting in the color fading. To avoid this, a good daily conditioner will do the trick (just don't leave it on for a long period of time).
What should I know before asking for a haircut ?- By Anna Armstrong
- How much length are you willing to lose?
- Where do you want your layers to be in accordance to your chin and in the back: long or short layers?
- How do you maintain your hair: round brush?Diffuse? Or air dry/wash and go?
How do I get my frizzy hair under control? –by Lewis Hunley
Frizzy and unruly hair is not fun, or pretty… Here are a few tips to help you tame your frizz on those hot and humid Nashville days:
- Wash your hair with Kerastase Discipline shampoo, and get a good lather going. After rinsing this out use your hands to squeeze out any excess water until water stops dripping. Then take your Kerastase Discipline conditioner and with a quarter size amount in hand apply to the mid lengths to ends. The little remaining product on your hand may be applied to the top of the hair so as not to weigh down the new growth. After a few minutes thoroughly rinse out and towel dry completely. Once you are out of the shower you will begin phase 2 which is the most important, applying product!
- Make sure hair is towel dried and no water is dripping.Take your KerastaseFluidissime antifreeze spray and gently mist it throughout your hair. This spray acts as a heat protectant and will smooth unruly tangles before you begin brushing.
- Take a quarter size amount of KerastaseKeratinethermique milk, which controls frizz and humidity and massage this from mid lengths down to the ends, leaving a little for the top of the hair. Take your tangle teaser brush and comb your hair, this will evenly distribute all of the product and guarantee the best end results.
- Using a round brush dry your hair as you normally would. Just a quick note that allowing the hair to air dry up to 50% before-hand will allow for a much easier round brushing experience.
- Once the hair is completely dry, if you feel the need to run a flat iron over it to seal the cuticle, make sure you use a good heat protectant before-hand. A dime size amount ofKerastaseChristaliste Sculpt can be applied and massaged into the dry hair (mostly the mid lengths to ends). Now safe to use your flat iron to smooth out any remaining frizzy areas.
- Finally take a Sheet of Kerastse K Carre touch up sheet (these look like small dryer sheets) and gently brush this all over and throughout the hair to put in a final seal and prevent those unruly fly aways and frizzy pieces from popping back up. A box of the Carre Sheets is small enough to fit in your purse to keep your blowout tame throughout the day and night allowing it to for several days.
In the event these steps are not enough to control extremely unruly hair you should talk to your hair stylist about possibly performing either a Brazilian blowout or a Keratin treatment. Just remember that both Brazilians and Keratins are only frizz reducers and will not remove the curl.
5 helpful hints for thinning hair- By Keith Williams
1. In gentleman’s styling, to give an illusion of thicker and fuller hair, have your stylist cut varying lengths into the crown of your head. The shorter pieces will give you texture that will build volume within your hair.
2. If thinning hair does not run in your family. Think about what you are going through and possibly if you are on any medications that could be causing you to have thinning hair/hair loss. Stress can be a great contributing factor to thinning hair.
3. There are a wide variety of products out there that is “guaranteed” to grow hair. But let’s face it if those worked we wouldn’t be faced with thinning hair. So you have to become an illusionist. You can disguise thinning hair by setting the foundation of your hair success, which is dependent on your shampoo and conditioner.KerastaseVolumifique shampoo and conditioner are perfect choices and add a great volume-boosting product like Lift Vertige by Kerastase. This will lift your roots, thus not allowing the hair just to lay flat to your scalp.
4. You know when you go get a blow out at the salon and your hair looks nice and full? You can achieve a very similar result. Remember previously I mentioned using volume-boosting products, you can add a round brush and by blow-drying your hair in the opposite direction in which your hair grows you are going to have that volume that will disguise thinning hair. If you are not sure on your hair patterns and how your hair grows ask your stylist to show you how your hair grows and what direction you need to dry your hair.
5. If you still feel like you need a boost. There are products (e.g. X-Fusion) that are fillers and they are used to disguise thinning hair, the results are pretty impressive. It is a one-time deal though, so you have to commit to giving yourself plenty of time to apply the product daily.
Do’s and Don’ts of Brow Waxing- by Dana Steinbrunner
There are a few simple rules to follow when eyebrow shaping. You have to determine the design of the brows, the tools you will need, and how to achieve the best results with preferably a reduced ouch factor. Before any wax service, be sure the client is not on any medication (ex. Retin-A) that could potentially irritate the skin.
1.) Do Decide on the Eyebrow Shape First.
You always need a plan of action when deciding where the brow will start, end, and where to place the peak of the arch. Draw an imaginary straight line from the outer sides of the ball of your nose to your brows. That is where your eyebrows should start. The arch of the brow should be determined by drawing an imaginary line from each nostril. For determining where the end of the brow should be, imagine a line at the outer nose and meet with the corner of the eye.
2.) Do Use a Quality Pair of Tweezers.
Low-quality tweezers may slide off or break the hair instead of pulling them out. A good pair are relatively inexpensive and worth the small investment. My pick: (Tweezerman Slant Tweezers $20)
3.) Do Trim if Needed.
A big mistake people make is taking out more hair when trimming the excess length really is what needs to go. A good trim gives the perfect definition to the brow.
4.) Do Use a Pencil, Powder, or Mousse for Filling or Correcting.
If you have over tweezed, have sparse brows, or are growing them out to a fuller shape, filling them in will give you the look you want. Try and use a shade that would blend with any brow color because you can always add more.
5.) Don’t Put a Shape that Isn’t Flattering to Your Face.
The right shape of a brow can totally change a face giving an overall “lift”. Ask your esthetician what they recommend after looking at your face shape.
6.) Don’t Shave.
There are little razors sold on the market specifically for your brows. Trying to shape your brows can be tricky enough with waxing or tweezing. Shaving your brows is a recipe for disaster and most likely will produce uneven results. Shaving also creates a blunt edge where stubble form, which isn’t pretty.
7.) Wax/Tweeze Correctly.
Hold skin taut by gently holding skin firm with your free hand while waxing/tweezing. Doing this means less tugging and pain on the skin.

How can I tell if I’m out of style?- by Anna Armstrong
Pretty much anything goes these days because every decade has evolved back around and is considered retro. However, in my humble opinion I consider these trends to never have been a good idea:
- Teased bangs. Yes, the ones from the 80's. These haven't revolved back around and hopefully they will only continue to appear in awkward high school photos.
- Tiger striped streaks across your head. Let's just say it: they're trashy looking (and a sign of a bad Pentecostal hair. In the salon, this is code for hair down to your ass.)
There are hair salons everywhere for a reason, to cut your hair! Just do it. Nobody thinks your stringy, damaged, old hair is sexy.
3 Easy Steps To Staying Gorgeous - by Lewis Hunley
Busy women on the go these days rarely have the time to sit and primp in front of the mirror for hours at a time. These days quick and easy maintenance is key. My three simple tasks to maintain a well defined gorgeous look is through the three latest trends for 2015. Hair, nails and cleaned up those eye brows!!
Many times women only wash their hair at most a couple of times per week and most always let it air dry, leaving it with that soft beach wavy look, that is a current look. An easy way to quickly switch it up, and get a quick fresh look for a night on the town or even if you’re late for work: Spray someKerastasePowder Bluff dry shampoo throughout the hair massaging evenly the product into the scalp to absorb oils. Quickly run a curling iron over largesections (leaving the last inch of hair out of the curling iron) to give that loose beach wave, then put a couple drops of KerastaseTouch Finale serum in your hand and run your fingers throughout the hair to provide anti frizz to each wave and to give it that final finished look.
Not-so-perfect-nails is the current look, even different colors on each finger are a popular choice. Element Salon offers many shades of Smith and Cult nail polish collection, one of my favorites is called Dirty Baby, which is a charcoal color glitter polish with small specks of gold. Ombre nails are the "in thing" for 2015. This look begins when the polish begins in the middle of the nail and is swiped up only toward the tips, leaving the bottom half untouched. You’ll love this look and you’re sure to get a ton of compliments!
The latest trend is to give your brows a softerand fuller look. You can see this look on Drew Barrymore, leaving a little thickness internally but smoothing out the edges. Pencil Brows are out! and should have never been in, (in this boy's personal opinion). Brows are so easy to maintain because the next time you’re in the salon for your color or cut service simply ask to have your brows done while sitting at the shampoo bowl, it only takes a few minutes and will give you that polished look.

Should I follow a hair trend? By: Daniel Dalecke
Trends come and go and eventually are recycled again for a new generation. However, just because a style is deemed trendy does not mean it is stylish for you. If you are thinking of trying out a trend on your tresses, always remember to ask - is this trend right for me? By reflecting on this question and consulting your stylist, you will be able to avoid a trend that you will inevitably regret.
1. Bangs- Bangs are a classic way to change your hair style. Although fringe can add flair to your hair, it is important that your bangs flatter your face shape. Not sure of your face shape? Your stylist will be happy to help you figure it out and help determine what bang style is best for you.
• Oval Face - You have the ideal face shape to pull off nearly all styles of bangs. Whether angled, blunt and thick or super short, bangs are sure to flatter you.
• Round Face - To achieve the illusion of a more elongated face, go for shorter bangs that are airy and wispy or an asymmetric bang.
• Long Face - Bangs are a great way to shorten the appearance of your face. Be sure to go for longer bangs instead of shorter bang styles. You can also pull off a blunt bang.
• Square Face - Long, wispy angled bangs are ideal for you because they will help divert the eye in a diagonal direction versus horizontal, adding length to your face.
• Heart Face - Blunt bangs, cut straight across below your eyebrows will cover your forehead and help soften a pointed chin. Also, a side-swept bang can flatter a wide forehead or you may opt for choppy bangs that are long enough to push to one side.
2. The Pixie Cut Communication with your stylist is the key to making sure you don’t regret the pixie trend. If you walk into a salon and say you want a “pixie cut,” you are saying that you want the shortest and tightest cut, which may not be exactly what you desire. Bring your stylist pictures of the cut you want, because nothing compares to visual examples and you want to be as clear as possible about the cut you desire, especially when you are cutting your locks short. In addition to proper communication with your stylist, you need to have an open mind. As with bangs, not every face shape can pull off the same style of a pixie cut. Allow your stylist to make suggestions about different pixie styles that will be the most flattering for your face shape.
3. Neon Hair Color Since the birth of punk rock, neon hair hues have been a fun form of self-expression. Thanks to style icons like Nicole Richie and Kelly Osbourne, this trend has transcended through the years into a fashionable statement. Before you turn a fashion forward trend into a fashion fail, consider trying a temporary dye that will wash out in a few shampoos, such as hair chalk. This is a fantastic way to experiment with colorful hues and make sure you find one right for you. If you are ready to try neon hues as a more permanent style, be aware of the upkeep required to ensure your locks stay full of luster and vibrancy. You will need to visit your colorist every 2 - 4 weeks, depending on the density of your hair and your daily hair care regimen.
Are hair extensions bad for your hair? –by Denise Shadwick
I have personally worn hair extensions six times over the last twelve years and they were amazing, I loved them! I felt like I had the hair I always dreamed of having instead of my flat straight thin lifeless short hair I was born with.
Myth #1: Hair Extensions Damage Healthy Hair.
I never experience breakage or shedding at all. Yes I am a stylist and I took great steps to maintain them and if you go to an educated experienced stylist, the maintenance information should be a large part of the service. You should leave the service knowing the frequency of check-up maintenance services, and what to do at home to make sure your extensions look and feel the best.
Myth #2: Hair Extensions Are Painful And Uncomfortable
The first time I wore them they were a little tight on the first night, but nothing that would cause loss of sleep of headaches. The second night it felt completely normal. Each subsequent time I had them put in I was prepared for the sensation of tightness, but I never noticed it again, and for the record: I have fairly sensitive scalp and skin. (You probably do want them to feel tight at the beginning so that they last longer and grow out nicely)
Myth #3: Hair Extentions Prevent Natural Hair From Growing
Not only false, but COMPLETELY so! Each and every time I wore them, or my clients have tried them, the hair underneath grew normally. Actually in my personal experience, for my slow growing hair it has always been the longest my hair grown. Maybe that’s because I focused the styling on the extension hair more than my natural? I’m not sure why that happens, but I look at it as an added benefit when it’s time to remove my much loved extensions.
3 Ways To Have Healthy Gorgeous Happy Hair? -by Daniel Dalecke
The formula for happy hair is fairly simple. Healthy Hair equals Happy Hair. Consider these three questions and you will be well on your way to healthy, happy hair.
1) How often do you shampoo your hair?
Shampooing your hair on a daily basis is not going to make your hair happy. Excessive shampooing can lead to a dry scalp and it can strip your hair of its natural oils, which help give it moisture and shine. If you have color-treated hair, shampooing too often will cause your color to fade faster.
Try shampooing every two to three days. In between shampoo days, use a dry shampoo to absorb extra oil and give your hair volume. Give Kérastase Powder Bluff dry shampoo a whirl to freshen your locks.
2) Do your hot tools need a rest?
If you find yourself using your blow dryer, flat iron or curling iron every day, consider giving them a rest and your hair will thank you. Waves and texture are in style, so embrace your hair’s natural texture.
When you do blow dry your hair, try using a diffuser. A diffuser will help prevent the damaging effects of heat on your hair by reducing hot air flow. Also, the diffuser will bring out the best in your hair’s natural texture, reduce frizz and add shine.
Worried your hair is just too frizzy? Try a smoothing treatment, such as a Keratin treatment or Brazilian Blow Out.
3) When was your last hair cut?
You might be surprised how a fresh cut can make your hair happier. Treat your tresses to frequent haircuts to prevent split ends and uneven strands. The more often you visit the salon, the easier it is to maintain your hair’s shape and style.
Depending on your hair style, your stylist may recommend visits between every four to six weeks. Schedule a hair appointment - your stylist will be happy to see you and your hair will be happy too.
3 SPRING & SUMMER UPDOS FOR LONG HAIR
A pour of buttery chardonnay, strappy stilettos, good friends, plenty of laughter and strings of twinkly lights … welcome to warm weather and patio season! And, in the South, we always blow past spring and jump right to the hot and humid summer temps. So for the long-haired ladies, that means limp, frizzy hair, most likely pulled into a ponytail or bun. This year, try something new!
We asked Element Salon owner Jason Facio and his team for some fun summer hair updos. His team of talented stylists walked us through beautiful, easy-to-recreate styles that can play across several events, from work and cocktail parties to spring weddings. Try one of these three styles, complete with step-by-step instructions, for a day at work or dining alfresco with friends.
1. PERFECTLY MESSY PONY
- Hair type: Works well with wavy, curly or straight
- Prep: Prefer lived-in hair, 1-3 days from last shampoo, to add grip
- Tools: Fine-tooth comb, 5-10 bobby pins, styling product and hair spray
With a few minutes prep, you can add sophistication to your everyday ponytail. Think of it as a modern twist on the Brigitte Bardot look … sexy and disheveled. You can add variety by wearing your pony tight and sleek or tall and ultra-tousled, or try adding waves. Element Salon stylist Keith Williams demonstrates how to easily recreate this look at home:
1. Run a styling mousse or gel from roots to ends to prep the hair for a lasting hold. Keith uses Kerastase Elixir Ultime for prep.
2. Then section off the top portion of hair on the crown of your head, and back comb (tease) to create volume. Use a fine-tooth comb and slowly back comb from the middle of the hair shaft to the ends. This will help avoid breakage. Also, when back combing, start with the top layer closest to your forehead, and combine the sections as you work back to keep them from separating when styled. Once the top section is complete, smooth the top layer with the comb to cover the teased section.
To create volume at the top of the pony, section off the top portion of hair on the crown of your head, and back comb (tease).
3. Now that the top section has volume, gather and use bobby pins to secure hair, where the base of your pony will be. Make sure this top section is smooth and forms an even bump. You can make your top section bump as tall or sleek as you feel comfortable with. Vary it up depending on the look you want.
Gather the hair where the base of your pony will be, and secure it using bobby pins.
4. Take the middle and bottom sections of hair and add them to the top section, forming a ponytail. Secure with a hair tie. Then, wrap a small hair section around the hair tie to cover it and secure with a bobby pin.
5. To achieve an “I didn’t try too hard” look, use a bobby pin to loosen the hair in the ponytail, pulling hair close to the roots, around the base of the ponytail and around your crown. And bangs can hang loose, curled or secured back with the ponytail.
2. DAY-TO-NIGHT TWIST
- Hair type: Works best with wavy and curly styles. Straight hair will look choppy in this style, so you may want to curl the ends.
- Prep: Prefer lived-in hair, 1-2 days from last shampoo
- Tools: 10-20 bobby pins, styling product and hair spray
Styled your hair for work, and now you want to change it up for cocktails and dinner? That’s easily done with this low, swept-up look by Element Salon stylist Aimee Saunders. It looks difficult, as if you had your hair professionally styled, but after watching Aimee demonstrate, it’s pretty effortless.
1. Start with your hair styled for work or your everyday look. Aimee’s model Keri had her hair curled with two braids created at her temples pulled back for a half up and down look.
Start with your hair styled as you’d wear it to work or for everyday.
2. Create two stacked ponytails on the side opposite your part. So if you part your hair on the right, create a pony with your top hair section on the left side. Then gather a second ponytail with the bottom section of your hair underneath the first ponytail, still on the left side. Wrap the elastic one inch from your head, then separate hair and pull tight to move the elastic up for a messy, tousled look.
Create two stacked ponies on the side opposite your part.
3. Now you will create the “updo” of this look. Separate out small sections of your pony. Twist each section around, and use a bobby pin to tuck around the base of the pony. Use different sizes of hair sections to vary up the look. The bobby pin placement should be halfway down the hair section, so that the ends stick out for a messy look. If the hair is straight when twisted and pinned, the result will be piecey and edgy. Curl the ends to soften the look.
Separate out small sections of your pony. Twist each section around, and use a bobby pin to tuck around the base of the pony.
4. Aimee used Kerastase Carre Lissant style sheets (they look like dryer sheets) to smooth down loose strands and flyaways, and Shu Uemura Essence Assolue to add shine.
A tousled, yet elegant, summer twist!
3. MODERN MILKMAID
- Hair type: Works well with wavy, curly, or straight
- Prep: none needed, perfect to start the day with dry or wet hair
- Tools: Fine-tooth comb, 5-10 bobby pins, styling product and hair spray
Love the fishtail braid? Stylist Brynn Boyd shared with us the next standout plait that’s sure to wow your everyday. This style is our trendiest of the group, so if you see yourself on the forefront of new styles, this look is for you.
1. First, start with a deep side part on your normal part side. Creating your part right above the arch of your eyebrow gives it the perfect asymmetric framing for your face.
2. Start a French braid at the base of your part, keeping the braid tight. You will plait the hair into a side braid incorporating all hair strands. If you part your hair on the left, you will braid the right side, incorporating hair slowly from the left.
3. Incorporate larger sections as you go, pulling from the middle of your hair, working the opposite hair from your part into the braid. Keep adding hair from the opposite side of your part.
4. Tuck and pin loose strands at the nape of your neck to incorporate all of your hair. If your hair is layered, you may have more hair to pin.
Loosen the braid by pulling the sections sideways for a messy, lived-in look.
5. Wrap in a small elastic. Now that the braid is complete, loosen it by pulling the sections sideways for a messy, lived-in look. Mussing your braid makes it more modern and sexy.
The modern milkmaid, complete!
We hope these fun styles from the pros at Element Salon inspire you to “think outside the bun.” With just a few minutes of prep and practice, you can enjoy an off-the-neck style that’s easy breezy!

Do hair products make a difference? – by Denise Shadwick
Yes, they do! First and foremost everyone needs a proper shampoo and conditioner. The right one for you depends on your hair and scalp type. Many people don’t understand how shampoo and conditioner work together: The shampoo’s function is primarily to cleanse the scalp and roots of the hair, while the suds will go through the ends as you rinse. The conditioner is meant to treat primarily the hair, and specifically mid-shaft to ends (from the ears down). Never scrub shampoo roughly into hair as it will roughen the cuticle. Remember: Hair is directional you always want to work with the direction of the cuticle so that it remains healthy and shiny.
Some of my favorite products based on need and hair type:
FINE HAIR needing volume:
-Kerastase Volumifique Shampoo and Thickening Effect Gel Treatment
-Kerastase Densite Shampoo
-Shu Uemura Muroto Volume Shampoo and Conditioner
COLOR TREATED HAIR:
-Kerastase Chroma Captive Shampoo and Conditioner
-Shu Uemura Color Lustre
FRIZZY UNTAMED HAIR
-Kerastase Discipline Shampoo and Conditioner
-Shu Uemura Shusu Sleek Shampoo and Conditioner
THICK UNRULY HAIR
-Shu Uemura Moisture Velvet
-Kerastase Elixir Ultime Oleo Riche (LOVE!!)
If you only purchase one product before you leave the salon, and you plan on blow-drying, flat ironing, or curl ironing your hair you must use a thermique heat protectant to make sure you don’t burn your hair off. Apply a dime size of product on the palm of your hand, emulsify with your hands to activate the ingredients, apply to your hair from mid-shaft to end (ears down) to create a protectant barrier from blow-dryers and heat tools.
These also vary depending on hair type:
FINE OR DAMAGED HAIR
-Kerastase Ciment Thermique
FRIZZY INTAMED HAIR
-Kerastase Keratine Thermique
COLOR TREATED HAIR
-Shu Uemura Color Lustre Thermo-Milk
THICK, DRY HAIR
-Kerastase Nectar Thermique
Should I wear my hair up or down?- by Dana Steinbrunner
When deciding to wear your hair in an upstyle for styled down, there are a couple of factors you should
take into consideration.
1.) What type of outfit or jewelry will you be wearing?
For example, if wearing big statement earrings or a dress/blouse that has a neckline you
would like to show off, you might choose to wear your hair in an updo to showcase your
2.) Will you be outdoors for a majority of the time?
Having your hair pinned up in an updo is a great way to combat potential frizz/flat hair due
to inclement weather conditions.
3.) Does your hair texture hold a style well for an extended period of time?
If you are having your hair styled hours before an event, you might opt for an upstyle versus
wearing your hair styled down. Fine textured hair might not hold curl as long as a coarser hair texture
would, so it should be taken into consideration when deciding to updo or not to updo.
What’s The Best kind of Hair extensions? –by Chelsea Hardy
If you’re looking to add fullness for the occasional night out or special event, you could either buy clip-in extensions at a beauty supply store, or you could purchase a HaloCouture hair extensions from a certified stylist to add volume and length in seconds with zero effort. If you are looking for extensions to wear long-term, there are several options. Dream Catchers is my personal favorite for fine to medium textured hair. These are applied through small cylinders that clamp to the hair, and with proper care cause no damage to the natural hair since they don’t require damaging clips or chemical glues. If you have naturally thick or course hair and are looking to achieve length you should look into tape-in wefts, but be warned: Tape-in wefts, require regular maintenance to make sure the hair in and around the wefts of tape does not matt. These are a great solution, but you must be willing to put in the maintenance work.
So, when it comes to getting the perfect extensions for you, the first step is to see a certified stylist for a consultation. Regardless of what extension method you decide to go with make certain you get good-quality Remy hair (This term refers to the direction of the cuticle within the extension strands, if it says Remy you know that all cuticles are facing down, like natural hair, to avoid tangles, frizz, and a rough appearance). Lastly and most importantly: Make sure you follow your stylist’s directions carefully when it comes to care and maintenance.
Is my hair too long?? Is it age appropriate? By-Lindsey Rhodes
Tired of those long winter layers? Spring is right around the corner, a new season, a new look! Spring 2015 proves the textured bob is the “IT” look for fun, tousled locks for women of all ages. Consulting with our talented stylists here at Element we can personalize the perfect length and hairstyle that best fits you. These three looks offer age appropriate style, color, and changeability.
Twenty-something starlets such as Jennifer Lawrence rocks a fun, flirty, chin-length bob with subtle balayage to define her texture and waves.
Bombshell Scarlett Johanssons’ shoulder length cropped bob is both sleek and sexy. Styled in different varieties she is instantly red carpet ready, or headed to the beach.
A textured bob with a twist, Kate Capshaw adds an haute heavy bang for versatility. Blown out straight across bangs, round brushed side swept bangs with a textured bob is absolutely age appropriate and stunning!
These three styles are just a few of the hottest trends for women this season. A new style leaves you feeling transformed and Spring-sational! ;)
What are the top 2015 Hair Trends? by Oxana Meade
While ultra-vibrant hair and dramatic ombre ruled 2014, we are starting to see a shift in the follicle forecast. As we step into the new year we're beginning to see a more NATURAL TREND attached to those tresses. The leading force toward this minimal vibe: balayage, increasingly popular highlights that aim to mimic those sun kissed highlights you got as a kid. And now, piggy backing off balayage, we're seeing another similar albeit darker, technique that we're sure is about to go mane-stream over the course of 2015: introducing Ecaille ( Aka "tortoise shell" in French). With smooth caramel tones, the ecaille technique is a slightly richer and darker version of your natural color paired with golden highlights and a whole lot of shine. Pop some balayage highlights on top of this rich shade and a gloss to keep it rich, and you've got this multidimensional, bombshell look. Hairstyles 2015 are totally natural and the top style trend is chopping off inches and creating texture and tousled look. Sectioning off layers, curling hair away from face, mid to ends. This gives your style an unfinished beach look. You want to have and enhanced natural look, and creating a natural subtle color and hairstyle require a talented stylist who understands the goal and is well versed in the Balayage technique to achieve the best possible results.
How can I get my frizz, and fly-away under control?
It’s so frustrating when you have the perfect cut, great shiny color and you walk out of your house into the humidity, get in your car filled with static electricity, and arrive at your destination looking like porcupine. Your perfect hairstyle just got attacked and lost a serious battle with the environment. You need to prepare for the next battle and here’s your weapon: It’s Kerastase’s first hair perfector sheet (AKA: Carre Lissant) formulated with advanced static-control technology to take hair from frizz to smooth. One sheet has five benefits. To apply it, you simply wipe your hair with it and voilà you will get:
-Fizz Free for the day
- Complete static control
- Flyaways tamed
- Humidity blocked
- Dullness, Gone!
How to tell apart a hairdresser from a Blonde Specialist stylist in Nashville
Many Nashville salons have talented stylists, and you can find some who will do a good job in getting you from your starting point to your desired tone and temperature of blonde. However there’s a difference between everyday blonde and the color achieved by a blonde specialist. Achieving a subtle, sun-kissed blonde that appears to grow naturally from the scalp is no easy task. This is why some stylists spend their entire careers perfecting the art of the blonde. If you want to speak with the best blonde specialists, call element salon and ask to set a consultation with a blonde specialist.
A true blonde specialist will achieve the look with an ammonia free approach whenever possible (and it’s usually possible) which doesn’t compromise the health of the hair. When necessary they will include “Olaplex” in the color formula which acts as a bond multiplier maintaining the integrity of the hair through the process. If needed he/she will also prescribe a conditioning treatment to add moisture back. In other words: Make sure your hairdresser is using the best possible tools. New ingredients are developed in the beauty industry at a similar pace as new I-phones hit the market, so if your stylist has been using the same product for three years in a row you may want to see what else is out there.
A blonde specialist will chose among a range of techniques to ensure the finished look is multidimensional:
A painstakingly detailed fine-stitch foil highlight will yield a beautiful result if done by a hairdresser who doesn’t cut corners. Larger stitches are also great if they are placed in the right area.
This European technique requires great skill from the stylists and often calls for years of training and developing the artist eye.
Similar in approach to the Balayage technique, but different placement.
If you goal is to find a stylist who can help you chose the temperature and tone of blonde that will look best on your skin tone and who can achieve a natural look while guarding the integrity of your hair, ask for a free 15 minute consultation with a blonde specialist at element salon in green hills.
How to avoid Green Hills and Hillsboro traffic at all hours
Nashville is the nation’s “it” city! From the culinary explosion of wonderful restaurants to the new music city convention center not to mention new Green Hills high-rise building about to go up on Hillsboro and Richard Jones, it’s all exhilarating to witness, but what are we going to do about the traffic problem? While the AMP option (whether you were for or against it) is all but dead in the water, and the bus system is simply not a real alternative in the south, it seems we are resigned to end up with the same traffic nightmares as Atlanta. There are a few solutions out there, but first if you need help right now the only thing to do is pick up a map and route your journey through less dense areas. This means that sometimes you will have to do counterintuitive turns, and travel opposite your destination for a short while in order to get to a thoroughfare with less traffic. For example:
To avoid Hillsboro going from 440 to Richard Jones; you need to travel opposite direction on Hillsboro once you exit the freeway, go away from green hills and turn right on Sweetbriar Ave. until you get to Belmont Blvd. and turn right. Keep going until you reach Glen Echo Rd. and turn right again, follow it all the way to the Hillsboro High School’s football field, and turn left on Hillmont Drive once you get to Richard Jones turn right and you’ll see element Salon on your right hand side, or you can keep going to Hillsboro and stop in Trader Joe’s if you want to bring us a snack.
Until we have found a solution to our traffic problem in Green Hills and Nashville we will need to find ways to make our morning routines more efficient. Here are some options that we can offer to help you gain some time so you can brave the traffic:
- Sometimes a change in hairstyle can shave off 20 minutes of your morning routine.
- Smoothing Treatments can cut 30% off your morning blowdry.
- Dry shampoo between washes will save time and also avoid color fading.
-Organize your outfit and plan for your hair style the night before.
We hope these alternative routes and time saving tips help, but the truth is these are only stop-gap measures, we will need to address the issue of public transportation sooner or later. If you have 15 minutes, take the time to watch this TED Talk presentation about a possible new form of affordable, public transportation proposal by a team of designers from Austin TX, I think we can name it the Music City Chord! Check it out.
Guide to choosing the best nail polish.
Nail polish is nail polish: There are very few variations in quality of nail polish between the different brands on the market today… Not anymore: Smith & Cult has developed a new Nail Lacquer. From the creator who brought us “Hard Candy” in the 90’s comes this revolution in Luxury Nail Lacquer. Smith & Cult is the clash of two aesthetics into one elegant/irreverent brand. Very few have been able to successfully convey a cohesive brand that marries the Paris-glamour aesthetic with the American-hipster revolution: But Smith & Cult does just that.
A new nail lacquer that can only be compared in quality to a Chanel nail polish, except that Smith & Cult’s formulas are:
-Dibutyl Phthalate FREE
The shade line up of colors is an exquisitely curated selection of 30 highly pigmented shades of long wear, high-shine formulas. The line includes a Base coat to ensure maximum adherence and a top coat to add protection, clarity and brilliant shine. The shades are on point with trends and offer a wide range of elegant understated tones and fun, quirky shades, find the one that’s perfect for you… unfortunately “gay ponies dancing in the snow” is sold out. Oh yeah, did I mention how clever and fun the names are?

Nashville Salon Sets Higher (Quality) Standards
Just like the restaurant industry in Nashville, TN is trending to higher quality, more sustainable and natural options with transparency of product, so is the salon industry. Education is reigning high and the "why" behind the product is more important than ever. Do you color your hair? If so, do you know how it works? This is important information to know, not only for your well being and conscience, but also for your beauty! Here's what's trending in Nashville:
1) Conscious Color
Ammonia free color is the way to go. Ammonia is a chemical in traditional hair color that forces the hair follicle open and deposits the color. The follicle is then closed, but not short of damaging the hair. Because of the frayed look this leaves, you will always need a treatment to smooth things over after this kind of color. Element Salon has an alternative just for you. Using an oil delivery system, the color is naturally absorbed by the hair because of scientific laws of nature. These naturally occurring methods leave the hair functioning normally without unnecessary damage.
For highlighting, the new standard is the Balayage coloring technique. This technique is truly an artform that takes years to perfect. The only two specialists in the state are available for you in Green Hills at Element Salon! Book an appointment, and avoid the use of foils that create a streaky look. Go with Balayage and get a natural sun-kissed look that will leave you refreshed and confident about your hair.
2) Artistry of Hair
A salon is an art studio first and foremost, your hair the medium. The salon industry has moved from loud, hustle and bustle atmosphere to a high class display of intention through hair! Element Salon has been voted Top 100 Salons in The US by Elle Magazine and has stylists from all over the country joining together to provide the most well-rounded salon in Nashville.
3) Above "Reasonable" Retail
It is not always about the price; It is about the quality and purpose behind the product. Here are two product lines that are raising the bar and setting a new standard for salon retail in Nashville:
- Shu Uemura: This zen philosophy on hair results in an approach rooted in desgin and synergy. Starting with a single ingredient from its natural environment, Shu Uemura, a Japanese artist, designs products that use high quality ingredients and have a honed intention for performance in the hair.
- Kerastase: This company is a technology driven company focusing on innovation through research and development. Every re-formulation is an improvement for you and your needs!
4) Better than a Blow Out
Working with Joseph DiMaggio of NY, Element Salon has designed their very own Signature Blow Out that leaves your hair looking great for days with just enough volume for perfection.
