The diamond rates 10 on the hardness scale, 0 being the lowest, 10 being the highest! This means the daimond is hardest stone we know. This, however, does not mean that it cannot experience damage. Suprisingly enough, working in the garden, cleaning the house, etc can cause chips to this precious stone. Make sure to remove your ring before working in a physical job.

You may not know, but these two are the same stone, just different colors. On the hardness scale, these rate as a 7.5, still a harder stone, but lower than diamonds. This means they are even more prone to damage in physical scenarios. Make sure to remove your saffires and rubies before entering the ocean. The salt water can actually cause abrasive damage to these stones.

On the hardness scale, the emerald is around a 6, depending on which emerald we are talking about, as they vary. This stone is a porous stone, kind of like our skin is porous. Also this stone comes out of the ground with natural oils. Like our skin, if we lack oils, it becomes brittle and can cause cracking and increased likliehood of damage. Because of this, you will want to make sure and avoid any drying by abstaining from use of soaps, detergents or abrasive chemicals on this stone.
To Clean: This stone should always be cleaned by a prefessional. No over the counter cleaners should be used.

Ladies, your pearls should be the LAST thing you put on before leaving the house. This porous stone can suffer and become brittle with exposure to hair spray, cologne, etc. These products clog the pores as well causing a depletion to the luster.
To Clean: Use a dry soft cloth and rub the pearls. Then, without make up on, rub the pearls over your face to replenish the natural oils from your skin's oil. Any additional cleaning must be done by a professional. Do not use over the counter cleaners!
(5) Soft Stones
