The Food and Drug Administration classifies mouth rinses into two categories - therapeutic and cosmetic. In general, therapeutic rinses with fluoride have been shown to actually fight cavities, plaque and gingivitis. On the other hand, cosmetic rinses merely treat breath odor, reduce bacteria and/or remove food particles in the mouth. They do nothing to treat or prevent gingivitis. People who have difficulty brushing (because of physical difficulties such as arthritis) can benefit from a good therapeutic mouth rinse. Caution: Even rinses that are indicated to treat plaque or cavities are only moderately effective. In fact, regular rinsing with water and use of good quality fluoride toothpaste are just as or more effective.

Flossing is a method for removing bacteria and other debris that cannot be reached by a toothbrush. It generally entails a very thin piece of synthetic cord you insert and move up and down between the sides of two adjoining teeth. Many dentists believe that flossing is the single most important weapon against plaque. In any event, daily flossing is an excellent and proven method for complementing your brushing routine and helping to prevent cavities, periodontal disease, and other dental problems later in life. It also increases blood circulation in your gums. Floss removes plaque and debris that stick to your teeth and gums. Floss at least once every day. Like brushing, flossing should take about three minutes and can easily be done while doing another activity, such as watching television.

Brushing is the most effective method for removing harmful plaque from your teeth and gums. Getting the debris off your teeth and gums in a timely manner prevents bacteria in the food you eat from turning into harmful, cavity causing acids. Most dentists agree that brushing three times a day is the minimum; if you use a fluoride toothpaste in the morning and before bed at night, you can get away without using toothpaste during the middle of the day. A simple brushing with plain water or rinsing your mouth with water for 30 seconds after lunch will generally do the job.

Spreading FREE smiles in Nashville!

Roach Family Dentistry is hosting their 4th annual FREE DAY OF DENTISTRY through a non-profit called Dentistry From The Heart on Friday, September 18th. Dr. Roach calls it “the best day of the year.” Patients come from all over Nashville to line up for much needed oral care. Every day Roach Family Dentistry provides care for patients without insurance, but on this day they do it for FREE!

Since they moved down the street from their old building to 3824 Bedford Ave into a beautiful & more spacious facility, they will be able to see more patients. In past years, they have taken care of 60-90 patients and this year they are hoping to see 110! It is first come, first serve. Patients are encouraged to arrive early, dress appropriately for weather and to bring chairs, blankets, water, snacks, etc. as they may be outside waiting to be seen. Each patient will get to choose either 1 cleaning, 1 filling, or 1 extraction.

Since their team is not nearly big enough to take care of all of these patients alone, many dental professionals in the area also volunteer their time. A big thank you to Dr. David Meister , Dr. Shane Williams , Dr. Mark Adamiak , and Dr. Dan Harris ! Also, for the 4th year in a row, the Green Hills Chipotle has donated lunch for ourhungry volunteers.

For those who want to help but cannot volunteer, they are taking donations of NEW socks! Socks for men, women, and kids. Soon it will be cold and socks will be greatly needed in the community. Feel free to drop them off at the office any time before Friday, September 18th.

“Every day we are blessed by this amazing Nashville community and now we have this day to give back!” –Dr. Roach

Why Nashville Patients Choose David Roach Family Dentistry

As anyone with access to Google can quickly tell, there is no shortage of established dental practices in the greater Nashville area. So what makes so many Tennesseans choose David Roach Family Dentistry for all their dental needs?

- When patients walk into our office, they are greeted by a happy staff that is happy to see them. We believe happiness is contagious! Our practice has a commitment to treating our staff with kindness, compassion, and appreciation so that they are able to turn around and treat our patients in the same way. Our mission statement is, “Working for the greater good of the patient, the practice, and the community.” We feel that when this is kept on the forefront as a priority, the rest will follow.

- Our office is patient-centric! Everything revolves around what will make the patient most comfortable. There is no separation area between patients and staff, and no areas of the office that are secretive. Each new patient gets a tour so that they know exactly what is happening and where it is done. The focus is on making each patient feel comfortable, like they belong here, because they do!

- There are no barriers. Many dental practices require patients and/or their insurance policies to be pre-approved before even setting foot in the building. Still, others require payment up front and in full, with no options for insurance coverage and no payment plans available. We believe all these policies are unnecessary hindrances to quality dental care, and we have eliminated all of them at David Roach Family Dentistry.

- Our patients’ feelings matter to us. Understandably, many people have certain psychological hang-ups about going to the dentist. Whether it is a phobia, a traumatic past experience, or just a bit of dental anxiety, the staff at David Roach Family Dentistry is equipped to put all of our patients at ease. We want to make sure that your experience in our office is unlike any you have ever had before, and put your fears to rest by exceeding your expectations, every time.

- We have fun! We have Netflix available in all of our treatment areas so patients can have fun watching their favorite television shows while getting work done. Anxiety is the furthest thing from their mind because they are too busy laughing and being entertained! Plus, we are constantly offering rewards and incentives for patients who refer friends and family. We send them gift cards to favorite stores and enter their names in drawings to win fabulous prizes, such as our current summer-long Apple Watch giveaway.

- Comfort is king. All of our patients are taught that if there is ever any point during their treatment, for any reason whatsoever, that they need to stop or take a break, they are able to raise their left hand to indicate it to our staff. However, our staff is also given thorough training in patient comfort and body language, and is always vigilantly watching for any unspoken signs of distress that might signal the need to pause and take a break.

- Above all, we are a grateful practice. Dr. Roach is grateful to his hardworking employees in tangible, meaningful ways, and they are then able to do the same for each and every one of his patients. Our staff is here with, for, and because of our patients. And our staff’s gratitude for their employment compels them to treat our patients with the utmost care and respect and to help create a safe space for them where they can come and focus on taking care of themselves and their families.

These are just a few of the reasons that so many families in the Nashville area choose David Roach Family Dentistry for all of their dental needs, and there are so many more! What will yours be?

Get Fresh Breath at the Music City Hot Wings Festival!

This year, David Roach Family Dentistry will be a vendor at the annual and greatly anticipated Music City Hot Wings Festival in Downtown Nashville on August 14-15, 2015. Thousands of people will gather from all around to partake in the amazing wings, delicious craft beer, great concerts, and other fun events surrounding the festival. There will be both a cooking and an eating competition, and dozens of local vendors will be there representing their companies and doing games, prizes, giveaways, and more!

Best of all, the festival benefits an extremely worthy cause: The Bootstraps Foundation . The Bootstraps Foundation is a local non-profit that exists to provide young men and women who have overcome immense obstacles in their short lives with college scholarships and the tools they need to succeed in life. It’s a great event for a great cause!

David Roach Family Dentistry will be present at the event with our Fresh Breath Booth, because what do people need more than fresh breath at a hot wings festival? We will be handing out Listerine, floss, and hand-misters to help festival attendees beat the heat and stay cool in what will undoubtedly be some pretty high temperatures. We will be featured alongside many notable businesses, such as Chuy’s , Nissan , The Olive Oil Store , Float Nashville , and so many more! The vendors section is an incredibly fun part of the Music City Hot Wings Festival as businesses are very creative with their booths and offer attendees all kinds of fun things to do and participate in between concerts and meals.

Tickets for the Music City Hot Wings Festival can be purchased on their website at musiccityhotwingfestival.com , but we love the festival so much that we are giving away four tickets as the prize for our July summer referral giveaway program! For the entire month of July, any current patient that refers a new patient will be entered into a drawing to win festival tickets, as well as entered into the overall summer-long drawing to win an Apple Watch on September 1. There are as many opportunities as referrals, so if you are a current patient, keep on referring your friends through the end of July and the end of the summer!

Last but not least, although the results are not yet in, we want to thank our loyal patients for nominating us in the category of “Best Dentist in Nashville” in The Tennessean’s Toast of Music City Awards . We will be keeping up with the voting process and sharing the results as we get them, but no matter what happens, we are grateful to our patients for valuing what we do enough to make it known publicly. We are so thankful for you!

If you have any questions about the Music City Hot Wings Festival, the summer giveaway program at David Roach Family Dentistry, the voting process for The Tennessean's Toast of Music City , or any other aspect of our practice, give us a call today! We can be reached at (615) 383-7801, and more information about all of our fantastic dental services can be found on our website at greenhillsdentist.net.

We are also doing a series of fun giveaways for our valued patients. During the month of July, any current patient who refers a friend will be entered into a drawing to win four festival passes for the Music City Hot Wing Festival , one of our favorite annual Nashville events.

This is our second year in a row as a vendor, and this year we will be hosting a “Fresh Breath Booth.” Our booth is a must-visit, because we’ll have Listerine, floss, and more dental necessities to keep everyone’s breath smelling fresh in the midst of eating all those hot wings! Most importantly, the Hot Wing Festival supports a charitable cause, so you can have fun and give back to your community at the same time.

We are excited to be able to offer this giveaway to our patients, and there is no limit on the number of times one may be entered into the drawing, so refer, refer, refer!

And for the entire summer, every patient who refers a friend will be entered into the end-of-summer drawing to win an Apple Watch. That means that in the month of July, all patients who refer friends will be entered into both the Music City Hot Wings Festival tickets drawing and the Apple Watch drawing, for double the chances of winning!

Overcome Dental Fear at David Roach Family Dentistry

Being afraid of the dentist is not just for kids. At David Roach Family Dentistry, we recognize that dental fear is a very real and legitimate obstacle for people of all ages when it comes time to go to the dentist. From sedation options to high definition television to pillows and blankets, we try to do everything we can to help our patients overcome their fears of going to the dentist.

When adults are afraid of the dentist, it is usually because they have had some sort of traumatic childhood experience that has branded a negative impression of the dentist into their minds for life. The dentist offices of the 1970s in particular were more like cold, unwelcoming laboratories that gave their patients nightmares long after the appointment was over. But a new wave of dentistry is here, and David Roach Family Dentistry is in the very center of it.

We have outfitted our entire office space with the patient in mind. For those with dental anxiety, we have provided a variety of “happy distractions” to put them at ease and get their mind off of any lingering fears they may have. The environment in our office is warm, modern and inviting. Our “comfort menu” consists of blankets, pillows, chapstick, ibuprofen, sunglasses for bright light, and the most comfortable chairs you have ever sat in. We have televisions with Hulu and Netflix where patients can select their favorite shows, and we encourage those with iPods and iPhones to listen to music if it helps them.

And when numbing or anesthesia of some sort is necessary, we have options to meet the comfort level of every patient. In fact, we refer to our experts as “numbing ninjas”! We make regular use of nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, every single day in our office. It is an affordable, convenient and painless process that will put any patient at ease. And in the case of more involved dental work, our expert dental anesthesiologist, Dr. Yezerski, will take care of you.

We offer a variety of different plans for those who need multiple procedures and may be struggling with dental anxiety. Those who prefer to get it all over with at once may benefit from Dr. Yzerski’s services, but those who prefer to get work done (and pay) in stages can meet with our specialists to determine the best plan for their nerves and their wallet.

Fear of the dentist is an incredibly common fear for people of all ages, but much of the time the anxiety stems from not knowing. We can talk with you, education you about our processes, and put together a plan so that dental anxiety does not have to dictate your life or your health. David Roach Family Dentistry can help you manage and overcome your dental fear and get everything you need done so that you can move forward confident in your health and your smile. Give us a call today at (615) 383-7801, or visit our website at greenhillsdentist.net .

$250 Off Clear Correct Invisible Braces

Throughout the month of June, David Roach Family Dentistry is offering $250 off Clear Correct invisible braces for any new or returning patient. Clear Correct can be a fantastic solution for adults OR children who want or need dental correction but do not want to go through the hassle of traditional braces, which stick out in pictures like a sore thumb and make it nearly impossible to keep your teeth clean at all times.

Clear Correct is the exact opposite. Clear Correct works by creating a series of invisible plastic trays that are worn over the teeth and serve to slowly and gently correct the teeth over a period of months. They are worn twenty-two hours a day and taken out only to eat and brush, and thus they do not get food caught in them like traditional braces. Clear Correct is easy, convenient, and less painful than traditional braces. The trays are comfortable and simple to adjust. Discomfort is minimal and usually only persists for the first day or two of each new tray. Each course of treatment is highly individualized for the unique needs and desires of each patient, and our trained and certified doctors will work with you to determine the best way to proceed in getting you the smile of your dreams. After the treatment is over, a simple retainer only needs to be worn at night, and can double as a bleaching or medicine tray if necessary. There are so many reasons to choose Clear Correct invisible braces!

Twisted or misaligned teeth are, of course, an aesthetic issue that causes many people anxiety or embarrassment. But the need for straight and properly aligned teeth is about more than just vanity! It is about your health and your future, as well. Our teeth move all our lives, and if you currently have crowding or misalignment, chances are good that it will only get worse as times goes on. Over- or under-bites can cause jaw issues, and crooked teeth tend to cause more cavities because they make certain spaces nearly impossible to reach with a toothbrush or floss. Getting a flawless smile is a benefit, of course, but the knowledge that you are making an investment in your future health is priceless.

So if you have crowding, twisted teeth, a misaligned bite, large spaces between teeth, or other dental issues, it is worth looking into Clear Correct to see if it is the solution you have been searching for! More information about Clear Correct can be found on our website at greenhillsdentist.com as well as at clearcorrect.com . To speak to one of our dentists, give us a call today at (615) 270-9051.

And for our current patients, remember! All throughout the summer any time you refer a new patient to us your name will be entered in a drawing to win a brand new Apple Watch—and there is no limit on the number of entries! So keep referring your friends and contact our office with any questions about the contest.

Roach Family Dentistry is MovingAcross the Street!

In the fifteen years that Roach Family Dentistry has been in business, we’ve been on the same street in Green Hills the entire time. We moved once in 2007 up the block, and now we are planning on last move across the street to a brand new, freshly renovated dental office space of our own design which we hope will serve as a home for us and our clients for many, many years to come.

Our current office space contains six dental suites and was not originally built for the day-to-day flow of a dentist’s office. The new space across the street currently has nine dental suites with the opportunity to add three more should the need arise, and the layout was designed with you, our clients, in mind. The new space will also carry over everything our clients love about the old space—the modern and up-to-date technologies, the (bigger) flatscreen TVs in every room, the beautiful, and the comfortable, welcoming decor.

We love the Green Hills area of Nashville, and we are excited to move to a building that fits our needs and the needs of our clients more perfectly so that we can continue to be rooted in our surrounding community and offer the best dental care in the best facility. Provided construction on the new building remains on track, we will be closing in our current building at 2:00 PM on Friday, June 12, and reopening in the new building Monday, June 15 at 7:00AM.

If you have any questions about our relocation, give us a call! We can be reached at (615) 383-7801. Our new address will be 3824 Bedford Ave. Nashville, TN 37215.

And don’t forget! For the month of June we are offering a special deal on $250 off Clear Correct invisible braces! For more information on Clear Correct, speak to your dental hygienist or visit clearcorrect.com .

Healthy Foods Your Family Will Actually Eat

1) Water – Water is KEY! Drink more of it. You don’t have to like it, just chug a few glasses more a day and you will feel more energized and clear-headed. Eventually you will start to crave its refreshing feeling!

2) Roasted vegetables – Roasting a vegetable makes them sweeter and more savory. We call them Veggie Fries! You can roast almost anything in the oven with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper at 400 degrees: carrots, beets, sweet potatoes, zucchini, cauliflower, peppers, butternut squash, acorn squash, red onions, asparagus, brussels sprouts, garlic, kale, bok choy, cabbage, etc. Try some of these with a little balsamic vinegar or fresh squeezed lemon juice at the end!

3) Salad bar – Make dinner fun by adding lots of fun toppings to your salad. Make it colorful and interesting with different shapes and textures. Ideas: sunflower seeds, golden raisins, cheeses, carrots, green onions, peppers, tomatoes, olives, sun-dried tomatoes, chopped apple, blackberries, strawberries, peas, almonds, roasted chicken, mandarin oranges, grapes, bacon, wontons, avocado, chicken, prosciutto, sweet potatoes, pine nuts, artichoke hearts, pistachios, etc.

4) Make your own salad dressing – Vinaigrettes are so easy! Just take a mason jar, put in a couple tablespoons of vinegar (balsamic, red wine, lemon juice, champagne), around ½ cup olive oil, 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard, a little salt, and then just SHAKE! When you make your own dressing, there are no hidden sugars or excessive amounts of salt. You can make extra to bring a salad to work to have a healthy lunch!

5) Put peanut butter on it – Anything and everything. Seriously. With some peanut butter, anything can become a great and filling snack: apples, celery, bananas, rice cakes, toast, crackers, pretzels, in a smoothie, in oatmeal, etc. Or just throw a few chocolate chips inside the peanut butter jar and grab a spoon for a late night chocolate fix. Even better, microwave the chocolate and peanut butter in a small bowl for ten seconds. We call it Peanut Butter Soup!

Patient Testimonials

grantq, Nashville

Thank God for David Roach Dentistry. My first experiance was absolutely wonderful! This is a buisness that cares about people. They were willing to work with me financially when no other dentist in town would. They treated me with kindness and respect as well as professionalism. I will be a client for life! I can't say enough about this wonderful place. The Dentist made me feel at ease and everyone in the staff was extremely kind and caring. I came in for an extraction and had been dealing with pain for several months. When the Dentist numbed my mouth and I got releif I started welling up with tears knowing that they were going to take good care of me. I had called and seen many other Dentist in Nashville that turned me down because I couldn't afford to pay them $600 dollars up front. I will be happy to make my payments every other week out of gratitude. This place deserves to be #1 in TN maybe the United States. Most Dentist I have been to have been cold and all about the money. This place actually cares! I can't say enough!!! Thank you David Roach Dentistry and Dentist Mark Lambert!

My dentist Dr.Lam was awesome I pass all my cards out I will get more when I come back .I told my co workers there is no other place like this none the first time in my life I was not nervous and shaking, I told them if they have a dentist he will never compare to mine and the workers would not be like these kind people, every where I go I will tell people about this dentistry I told my daughter in Georgia.I cannot stop giving you all a good report.I can't wait to come back I have never felt this way about a dentist office, it is peaceful just walking in every one is so kind they are a great asset to this office .I want to say thank you for you kindness this made things ready for me, thank you Dr.Lam you are an awesome and great Dentist.Bless all of you

I came in for fillings on my upper front teeth and I was very nervous (haven't had any real dental work since I was a little girl). Thankfully, the RDA and the dentist were very calming and made me feel much more relaxed during the entire procedure. The procedure didn't take a long time and my fillings look perfect! Thank you for the great work! :-)

As a man with no insurance and a severe toothache, the people at this dentistry got me in quickly and fixed the problem, as well as accepting a payment plan to accommodate my financial needs. Dr. Roach has been thoroughly helpful with everything I've needed. Thanks, guys!
