Where to Begin with Vitamins and Supplements
Walk into any neighborhood market or grocery store and you will see hundreds, if not thousands, of vitamin and mineral supplements of all kinds. Some are all-encompassing. Some are for specific vitamins. Some are for women. Some are for men. Some are for pregnancy. Some require a prescription. How does one even know where to begin when it comes to selecting the best supplements for their health? Do we even really need supplements at all?
Well, in an ideal world, no. In an ideal world, everybody would eat a diet rich in vegetables and fruits, whole foods, responsibly raised meats and healthy fats, with no processed food or synthetic chemicals leading to nutrient deficiency and absorption issues. But of course, that is not the world we live in. In the days of fast food and processed products lining the aisles of our grocery stores from top to bottom, most, if not all folks, can benefit from taking a supplement of some kind. Of course, nutrition from food is always the optimum choice, but vitamins, also called neutriceuticals, exist to fill in the gap between what we know we should do and what we actually do.
So, where do you start? At DCA Pharmacy, we encourage our clients to use the ID LIFE nutrition assessment to determine the areas in which you are most likely to be deficient. Following that assessment, we are able to do a series of tests to confirm the results and create a plan for optimum nutrition. Our pharmacists will put the program together for you on the basis of your test results and in conjunction with knowledge of any prescription drugs you may be taking, in order to start guiding you towards a regimen that meets all of your needs.
But with all of the supplements available in the grocery store, why bother going through a pharmacist? Two reasons: first, pharmacy-grade neutriceuticals are more heavily regulated by the government than food-grade neutriceuticals. So, you can be more confident of the purity of what you are taking. And second, you may be taking a prescription drug of some sort and may not be aware of the specific interactions of that drug with various vitamins and minerals. A pharmacist will be able to help you ascertain the best vitamins to choose—and to avoid.
So if you have questions about neutriceutical supplements, give DCA Pharmacy a call today! Reach out to us at (615) 832-7232, or visit our website at dcapharmacy.com to learn more about all of our services.
Key Tips To Overall Wellness In Nashville
DCA Pharmacy Wants You To Be Healthy Mentally, Emotionally, And Physically
Learn to treat your body with respect and tend to your needs. We all want to succeed in life. To reap positive rewards we must put in the effort to take care of ourselves. Here is a list to remember when taking charge of your well being:
Drink plenty of water.
We all have heard that we are supposed to drink at least 8 glasses a day. But you have to remember to look at your weight. If you are heavier, you may need more. Also, with the warmer weather approaching us, you will need to replenish your body more.
Getting your heart rate up is key to a healthier fit lifestyle. Strength training is also beneficial. Muscle burns more calories at rest. So, toning up your muscles is key. Always consult in a physician to make sure you are healthy to exercise.
Relax and meditate.
Even taking deep breathes throughout the day will supply your brain with more oxygen to concentrate and focus on your daily tasks. But if you really want to experience peacefulness, daily meditation is vital to connecting your mind and soul. You will be amazed at how well you will perform with a clear mind.
Keep up with medications.
Look for interactions and remember dosage. Some foods are not good to take with certain medications. Make sure you read and learn all about the medications you are taking. And be sure to have them out of reach from children. Throughout the year, children become victims to being poisoned.
If you are a writer, this will be easy. But if you are not a writer, it might be daunting to pick up a pen and start writing. Give it a chance though. Documenting your goals, thoughts, and feelings is a great way to learn how to cope and grow.

Tips For A Healthier You In The New Year
If you’ve made a new year’s resolution, chances are you are doing it to have a healthier lifestyle. Recognizing the need for change is a big step towards that goal. Ultimately though, success will rest on sticking with that resolution for the long term. Here are some tips to help with keeping your resolutions:
1. Have a plan: Committing to change will take careful planning. In order to succeed, you will need to identify specifics in your behavior that have to change. Try writing down steps you need to take in order to keep your resolution. Refer back often to that list to help keep you motivated in attaining goals.
2. Set small goals: Thinking of your resolutions in the long term can be daunting. Instead, set short term benchmarks for yourself. For example, if you resolution is to exercise more, set a goal of the number of times for a gym visit in a two week period. Challenging yourself to meet or exceed that short goal will give you a sense of accomplishment and motivate you to set another goal.
3. Be realistic: Do not make your goals so lofty as to be unobtainable. Saying you will never eat your favorite food again is unrealistic. Instead, make a plan to eat it only once a month rather than to usual once or twice a week.
4. Talk with (the right) people: Talking with people about your resolution can be helpful. By telling friends and family your goals, you now have an extra level of commitment. Be sure to avoid naysayers, though. Someone else’s negativity can be a drag on your spirit.
5. Recognize that you will stumble: Eventually you will have a slip when it comes to your resolution. Maybe you have that large milkshake or miss your gym appointments for a week. Don’t be so discouraged that you give up. Instead, use it as motivation to get right back to your plan.
6. Reward yourself: Rewards are strong motivation for meeting goals. Make sure your rewards aren’t counterintuitive. If you are celebrating a weight loss goal go out and buy a new outfit rather than a box of chocolate.

A different approach to migraine therapy
Approximately 10% of theU.S.population suffers from the debilitating effects of migraines. Often incorrectly labeled as just a bad headache, migraine is a chronic neurological disease that can have a serious impact on the sufferers’ quality of life.
A traditional treatment is the prescription drug sumatriptan. Sumatriptan reduces the vascular inflammation associated with migraines. Sumatriptan is manufactured in tablet form, as an injection and as a nasal spray. These traditional delivery methods work for many migraine patients.
There are, however, many reasons why these traditional methods do not work for everyone.
- Tolerability Issues
- Risk of Overuse
- Risk of Dependency
- Difficulty finding relief
Patients that experience these problems with traditional delivery of sumatriptan now have a new option.
Topical Regional Neuro-Affective (TRNA) Therapy involves the use of sumatriptan in the form of a transdermal cream. Applied to the back of the neck, the trans-dermal cream has many advantages over the tradition delivery methods.
The free nerve endings below the skin surface in the back of the neck are involved in the process of migraine generation. By applying the sumatriptan cream to this area, there is a rapid and prolonged drug effect not achieved through traditional methods.
Side effects are also reduced. Tolerability issues involving ingestion (tablets and nasal sprays) are avoided. There is also the lack of pain and invasiveness associated with injections.
Sumatriptan cream used in TRNA Therapy is a compounded medication. There is an added benefit to this fact in that a physician can request the strength of cream made specifically for the patient.
If you are a candidate for TRNA Therapy talk to your physician about a prescription for sumatriptan cream. DCA Pharmacy is authorized to compound sumatriptan cream. Call today if you need assistance or further information.

Nashville Guide To Hormone Replacement Therapy
Many people today are considering hormone replacement therapy. Low hormone levels are a natural occurrence of aging. The best way to restore these hormone levels is with the use of bio-equivalent hormones. Bio-equivalent hormones used in the course of medical treatment can lead to many health benefits to improve the quality of life.
Here are some of the reasons to consider bio-equivalent hormones as well as the history of hormone treatment then and now:
Symptoms in menopausal women:
-Decrease in Libido
-Decrease in Energy
Symptoms in women before menopause:
-Water weight gain
What has been available in the PAST?
The two main hormones treatments for women involve estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen is used to promote cell replication and progesterone is used to regulate the process. In the 1980's, hormone supplements consisted of synthetic estrogens derived from horse urine. Synthetic progesterone called progestin was also used. While there was some benefit derived from the use of synthetic hormones, studies found that there are increased risks of heart disease and some forms of cancer with the use of these synthetics.
What is available NOW?
Bio-equivalent hormones are NOT the same as synthetic hormones. Bio-equivalent hormones have the same molecular structure as your body’s naturally occurring hormones. The added health risks associated with the use of synthetic hormones have not been shown to occur with the use of bio-equivalent hormones. Consequently, bio-equivalent hormones may actually have the benefit of protecting against heart disease.
Improvements for women after using bio-equivalent hormones:
-Relief of symptoms associated with PMS and menopause.
-Healthier sleeping patterns
-A return to hormone levels of a 30-35 year old
-More regular menstrual cycles
-Increases bone density
-Raises good cholesterol level
-Lowers bad cholesterol level
-Improves flexibility and elasticity of blood vessels
-May protect against heart disease
Andropause is defined as symptoms resulting from the loss of testosterone. Around the age of 35, men’s testosterone level begins dropping 1-2% per year. Unlike the females’ menopause, symptoms of andropause are gradual and men may not realize they are occurring.
-Lack of libido
-Decrease in competitive drive
-Decrease in energy
-Decrease in sexual performance
If you are male and you just feel like lying on the couch and watching TV after work every day, you may be experiencing andropause.
What has been available in the PAST?
Andropause is a relatively new discovery and the condition was not previously treated.
What is available NOW?
Bio-equivalent hormone treatment for men can reverse the symptoms associated with andropause. There is no proof of any major side effects with using bio-equivalent hormones in normal doses.
Improvements for men after using bio-equivalent hormones:
-Restored muscle mass
-Improved sexual performance
What is the difference in bio-equivalent hormones and over the counter hormone treatments?
Bio-equivalent hormones for both men and women are derived from natural sources like wild yam extract and soy beans. While you may see these listed as ingredients in over the counter treatments, they will not deliver the benefits of bio-equivalent hormones. These natural ingredients must be converted in a lab to hormones your body can use. Your body cannot convert these ingredients into usable hormones. You are wasting your money with these over the counter treatments.
Other factors that affect hormone production and balance:
Other factors besides aging can affect your hormone levels. By controlling these other factors, you can increase the effectiveness of the hormone replacement therapy.
Your body’s level of stress can affect your hormone levels. Stress releases cortisol, and excess cortisol blocks hormones. With the low level of stress that most of us experience every day, our hormone production is suffering. Practice techniques that help relieve stress like:
Find stress relieving activities that work for you
Another factor that affects the hormonal levels is cholesterol. Cholesterol is something the body uses to heal injury. Another thing cholesterol does is acts as a precursor to our hormones. If all of the cholesterol is being used as a response to inflammation and injury, your body has none left to convert into hormones. Maintaining healthy levels of cholesterol will help your body to keep producing hormones.
